  2. FN Tandem accelerator – fully refurbished with a once-off grant of R16M and ~R10M running costs (since 2005)

  3. Proposed layout of beam lines for AMS of the 6MV EN tandem accelerator

  4. Proposed layout of beam lines for AMS of the 6MV EN tandem accelerator

  5. LLNL Multi cathode Source of Negative Ions by Cesium Sputtering for AMS [Funded by grant from IAEA (R2.7M)]

  6. iThemba LABS Negative Ion source by Cesium Sputtering base on the LLNL design for AMS 300 micro A Carbon 12 13/12/2009

  7. Electrostatic Analyzer and Analyzer Magnet under construction in Faure Will be coupled to MC-SNICS ion source in Faure for testing before shipping to Gauteng to be coupled to FN Tandem • Electrostatic Analyzer • Analyzer Magnet

  8. With MC-SNICS ion source coupled to FN Tandem, beam injection and characterization can commence – before the end of 2010

  9. Sample preparation laboratory : • AMS waste of time if sample is contaminated! • Hence, sample procurement at site is vital! • Sample preparation is vital! • Will utilize experience and expertise of Environmental Isotope Laboratory in sample preparation

  10. Cost for the AMS project

  11. Applications of AMS

  12. Hence, AMS has wide range of applications and hence potential “customers”, both local, regional and international e.g. • Future of iThemba LABS (Gauteng) dependent on realization of AMS facility
