  2. What is a SMAC? • Apply course concepts to a workplace issue • Develop one or more managerial abilities • Demonstrate ethical behavior and social responsibility It is an opportunity for you to: SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

  3. Two kinds of SMACs • SMAC for MGT 500 is a special breed • An exception to the rules • Instead of a regular SMAC, students develop individualized development plans • SMACs for all other courses share common rules SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

MGT 500 SMAC format • Discussion of Career Anchors and Life Vision • MBTI • Relevance of each managerial ability to Job, Career, and Future • Assessment of Current Abilities • Priority for Development • Plan for Development • Ethics and social responsibility • Plan for Continuous Improvement SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

  5. Regular SMACs = Self-directed Learning The SMAC is your project • Be creative • Strive to produce an effective plan for your workplace • Instructors will provide advice, but you are the “director” SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

  6. Team SMACs • Program requires at least 2 team SMACs • Students choose teammates • Instructor approves team size • Peer evaluations are part of project report • SMAC length = same as individual SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

  7. SMAC Proposal (becomes the Learning Contract once we sign it) • Issue(s) you intend to address – the problem at your workplace you want the project to fix • Course concepts which you intend to apply • Managerial abilities which you plan to develop • What you will do with ethics/social responsibility • The main output of your report – typically a specific plan to solve the problem • Resources SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

SMAC Written Report • 8 – 12 pages (exclusive of cover page, illustrations and appendices) • APA Style • Appendices: Self-assessment of Managerial Abilities, Ethics and Social Responsibility, Learning contract, • Consult Student Information Handbook and course outline for Guidelines & Samples SJC/Dr. Coty Keller

SMAC Grading • SMAC =One-third of course grade • Grading criteria in Keller’s courses: • Creativity • How well you apply course concepts • Whether your report affects what is going on in the real world • The clarity and credibility of your report. • Whether you do what you say in your proposal • How well you follow the prescribed framework • Expect grade penalties for late reports SJC/Dr. Coty Keller
