  1. LDI CEO Update Will Ferniany, PhD October 2012

  2. Items to Cover Today • Cooper Green • Medicaid • Five Year Capital/Program Plan

  3. Cooper Green • Commissioners have hired Otis Story to help with transition. Political atmosphere very charged. • Have paid UAB $850,000 of the approximately $7 million owed. • As the inpatient unit phases down, we will need to remove our residents. Our first responsibility is to the education of the residents. This may create operational problems for Cooper Green. • Still considerable misunderstanding in the community on the plan. The plan is to still offer inpatient services but on a contractual basis – basically to outsource the service.

  4. Medicaid • September’s positive vote was very important but temporary victory. • Must have alternative to reform Medicaid by this legislative session or we will have commercial managed care in Alabama – not a good outcome. • Working with Don Williamson, Alabama Hospital Association (AlaHA) has led the effort to reform Medicaid; but this effort will not be successful coming from ALAHA.

  5. Medicaid: Continued • At ALAHA’s request, Governor is establishing a Medicaid Task Force. Will be staffed by UAB’s Alabama Health Policy Initiative (AHPI). Medicaid will fund AHPI, and AHPI will hire consultant to help with effort. • Appears to be two alternatives • Commercial Managed Care • Providers taking risk (Oregon Model)

  6. Five Year Capital/Program Plan • Process to achieve the additional $251,500,000 of cash flow or $50,300,000 annual improvement over next 5 years. • Following committees charged with submitting plan by December 2012: • Oversight Committee: Ray Watts (Chair); Will Ferniany, Jim Bonner, Richard Margison, Mike Waldrum, Reid Jones, and Dawn Bulgarella • Capital Projects and Initiatives Prioritization and Reductions Committee: To prioritize the proposed capital projects and initiatives in the study

  7. Five Year Capital/Program Plan • Development Committee: Evaluate and conclude the feasibility of the projected level of $107,000,000 contributions and philanthropy • Cost Reduction Committee: Develop recommendations for cost reductions across UAB Medicine. Goal: develop strategies to reduce the cost run rate by 2.5%. • Strategic Growth and Revenue Enhancement Committee: Develop strategies to identify new or enhanced profitable opportunities for margin growth. Goal: expand margins by $10,000,000 per year.
