Dial #1: Access Indicators: • Ethnicity • SES • Major • International • Success Predictors Explanation: Because of the significant progress made in establishing a system of enrollment management, the operational processes that contribute to access are well developed and understood. Targets in each area will be established annually through the EMSSC process consistent with the strategic initiatives and mission of the University. For example, in order to become eligible for Title V grants, the committee may establish an enrollment target for Hispanic students and low SES students. “Success Predictors” may be identified through specific research studies to determine the characteristics of CSUCI students that most likely lead to success in this learning environment. These characteristics may become the theme of marketing efforts to attract these students. The dashboard indicator for “Success Predictors” will provide feedback on how successful these marketing efforts have been in attracting applicants with these characteristics. CSU Channel Islands

All numbers in this chart are made up to provide an example of how the dashboard could be calculated. 2. “Weight” and “Target” would be determined annually by the EMSSC process. 3. “% Achieved” is calculated by dividing Actual by Target. 4. “Total Achieved” is the weighted sum of the “% Achieved” for each measure. Measures greater than 100% are calculated at 100%. 5. The colors are assigned as follows: Red=50% or less; Yellow=51-94%; Green=95% or more. Explanation: All indicators in this example except “Success Predictors” relate to enrollment management target goals developed by the EMSSC process. “Success Predictors” may be identified through specific research studies to determine the characteristics of CSUCI students that most likely lead to success in this learning environment. Dial #2: Retention (continued) Explanation: • “Fall-to-Fall Persistence” and “Fall-to-Spring Persistence” are traditional measures of retention that can be benchmarked with other CSUs by incorporating this into the annual target. • “Student Progress” represents multiple measures that will be developed over the next five years. Initially, it will include measures such as successful remediation, GPA, and ratio of credits earned to credits taken, which are all contained in PeopleSoft. As the University develops a systematic process for identifying and measuring student milestones, the Dashboard will include these milestone measures as indicators of “Student Progress.” • While CSUCI has many operational processes to support retention, these have not yet been developed into a systematic approach. Much work is needed to develop a Retention Management system. For this reason, the Retention Initiative requires the development of a tactical plan to achieve the desired outcomes of the strategic plan. To measure the progress of this effort, “Percent of Tactical Plans Accomplished” is included as an indicator of success. • “Potential Barriers to Retention” is identified as a “leading” indicator to track student progress at key points in their academic career. This indicator might include specific milestones, completion of remediation, gateway courses, pre-nursing students, etc. These items will be identified annually through specific research studies and areas targeted in the tactical plan. We will need to define rubrics for successful navigation of milestones. Studies of these potential barriers will provide feedback on the potential need for developing interventions. • The indicator for “Service and Program Interventions” is a “lagging” indicator which provides feedback to service providers of the impact of the interventions including numbers of students who use the intervention and their subsequent success in progressing through their academic career. This indicator might include student involvement in clubs and other co-curricular activities, on-campus housing, tutoring, UNIV 100, etc. These items will be identified annually according to the areas targeted in the tactical plan.

All numbers in this chart are made up to provide an example of how the dashboard could be calculated. 2. “Weight” and “Target” would be determined annually by the EMSSC process. 3. “% Achieved” is calculated by dividing Actual by Target. 4. “Total Achieved” is the weighted sum of the “% Achieved” for each measure. Measures greater than 100% are calculated at 100%. 5. The colors are assigned as follows: Red=50% or less; Yellow=51-94%; Green=95% or more. Explanation: “Retention” is the broad term used to describe students continuing at CSUCI. Two components of retention are “persistence” and “progress”. “Potential Barriers to Retention” and “Service and Program Interventions” measures are set up to be counted as “implemented” or “not implemented” and are neutral towards “success” or “failure” in order to provide a safe environment for research and pilot testing. Dial #3: Success Indicators: • Degrees and Credentials Earned • Percent Tactical Plans Accomplished • Pillar #1 • Pillar #2 • Pillar #3 • Pillar #4 Explanation: “Degrees and Credentials Earned” can be defined so that it can be benchmarked with other CSUs and incorporated into the annual target. While CSUCI has many programs and services to support student success, these have not yet been developed into a systematic approach that is tied to the university mission and outcome statements, such as the “Characteristics of Graduates.” The Strategic Initiative includes conversations to develop a matrix which indicates where students are exposed to each of the four mission pillars during their academic career. For this reason, the Success Initiative requires the development of a tactical plan to achieve the desired outcomes of the strategic plan. To measure the progress of this effort, “Percent of Tactical Plans Accomplished” is included as an indicator of success. Indicators for each pillar need to be defined. These will come mostly from the matrix which will show where students get experience in each mission area. We also can review various surveys, such as NSSE, CIRP, and CSS, to see which one has questions that best cover the four pillars. One or more of these surveys will provide the students’ perspectives on how well each pillar area was incorporated into their educational experience at CSUCI. CSU Channel Islands

Explanation: Degrees/certificates can be broken down into separate measures such as degrees awarded to native freshmen, degrees awarded to upper division transfers, and credentials recommended. The EMSSC may also want to include other commonly used and benchmarked measures such as time-to-degree. The Pillars indicators provide the opportunity to collect data from multiple sources which indicate the numbers of students who have participated in activities and courses related to each of the pillars. Student learning outcomes in each pillar area may also be developed and included in these indicators. CSU Channel Islands
