The plan called for installing ground and space-based ballistic missile defense systems to protect against nuclear missiles strikes This is essentially what started the idea of using nuclear missiles as a defense tactic rather than an offensive weapon The Strategic Defense Initiative Organization was established to oversee the SDI

Reception Critics called this initiative overambitious, unrealistic, and unscientific--based on untested theories and technology-referred to as “Star Wars” Some thought that it would instead reignite “an offensive arms race” Many thought that space would be militarized and the nuclear balance of power would be upset

The end of the Cold War led to discussions of breaking up the SDI President H.W Bush limited the defense system to ground-based sites only 1993- the SDI was reorganized into the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO) The system was called the National Missile Defense (NMD) 2002- the BMDO was renamed again- Missile Defense Agency (MDA) A NATO missile defense system recently went live in Turkey—when was it? January 16 of this year
