Current and Future Instrumentation Priorities in Accelerator Operations

This presentation addresses the pressing and future priorities of instrumentation within accelerator operations, focusing on various projects including NUMI tasks, TeV BPMs, Rapid Transfer Line BPMs, and upgrades to critical systems such as Flying Wires and the Tevatron BLM system. Key challenges include maintaining proper assignment of manpower, aligning skill sets with project needs, and ensuring thorough collaboration with external contributors. Insights from the meeting highlight the importance of strategic prioritization and ongoing analysis to enhance instrumentation effectiveness and reliability.

  1. Instrumentation -- present and future (Jean’s title)Bob WebberAccelerator Run II MeetingThursday, January 8, 2004

  2. Instrumentation Priorities – My Perspective • NUMI tasks (struggling to identify the target and really get going) • TEV BPMs project (needs increased AD attention) • Rapid Transfer Line BPMs (no one presently assigned) • Recycler BPM finish-up (just to wrap it up) • Pbar Flying Wires (just to get it done) • SY-120 (except BPM front-end) • Flying Wire and Synch light front-end upgrades (for SDA robustness) • Flying Wire performance analysis (on going) • BLT standardization and robustification • Toroid signal integration and readout upgrades • TeV IPM • Accumulator BPM MOOC/ACNET upgrade • (MI BPMs hardly even make my list) • Tevatron BLM system at some priority (since I first made this list)

  12. Priorities vs. Assignments • Priorities and current assignment of manpower are not necessarily self-consistent • due to the skill mix and operational maintenance responsibilites of individuals within the Department. • Some projects are not being worked on at the level of effort that task prioritization would indicate appropriate. • That's why you might judge some things in above list as not properly prioritized; they just end up being high priority for persons less well qualified for other things. • Sad but true.

  13. Collaborations/Outside Contributors • PPD – Flying wires, multiwires, electronics assembly, synch light, Flying Wire PMT and OTR mechanics • CD – Tev BPM project, Recycler BPMs • University of Texas – NUMI profile monitors • POST-PRESENTATION ADDITIONS: • I failed to acknowledge that the Instrumentation Department also receives critical support and cooperation from the AD Controls, Mechanical Support, and RF Departments • I did mention at the meeting, although not included in these slides, that much instrumentation work is also done to varying degrees by each of the machine systems departments.

  14. What Worries Me • NUMI tasks (struggling to identify the target and really get going) • TEV BPMs project (needs increased AD attention) • Rapid Transfer Line BPMs (no one presently assigned) • Pbar Flying Wires (just to get it done) • SY-120 (continued maintenance of disparate systems) • BLT standardization and robustification • Accumulator BPM MOOC/ACNET upgrade • Tevatron BLM system at some priority (since I first made this list) • (MI BPMs hardly even make my list)
