  2. Introduction •The Internal Combustion (I.C.) engine is a heat engine that converts chemical energy (in the fuel) into mechanical energy (available on a rotating shaft).

  3. History • 1859Discovery of oil. • 1876First four stroke spark ignition engine produced by Nicholas Otto. • 1892First compression ignition engine produced by Rudolph Diesel.

  4. Classifications Internal combustion engines can be classified in a number of ways: • Type of ignition: Spark Ignition (S.I.) and Compression Ignition (C.I.) • Method of fuel input (S.I. engines): Carbureted And Fuel Injection. • Fuel used: • Gasoline (Petrol / Benzene) • Diesel • Other (Gas, LPG, Alcohol….etc)

  5. S.I Engines • Spark Ignition Engine depends on a spark obtained from spark plug situated on the head of the engine • This engine operates using gasoline fuel.

  6. Engine Components • Block • Cylinder • Combustion Chamber • Piston: Cylindrical mass transforming the pressure forces to the crankshaft. • Crank Shaft • Cam shaft • Valves • Crank Case • Spark Plug

  7. Comparison between Carburetor and Injection • Cost The injection needs more complicated components than carburetor (sensors, injectors) so its more expensive and harder on maintenance. • Pollutions The emissions represented by injection is less than carburetor engines so its more preferable on automotive application.
