Homework • Weekly math- Excel or an Investigations activity • Spelling word work and practice • Guided reading practice/reader’s response • The Homework Menu
Reading Groups • Guided reading is small group reading instruction based on the child’s ability level. • I try to meet with every group twice a week • We will be reading books on your child’s “Instructional” level. We will be working on specific needs and skills in a small group. • I send books home on days we meet with groups in ziplock baggies. Your child needs to read his /her book as homework. Please sign the Guided Reading Log inside the bag.
Words Their Way (WTW) • This is our spelling program • Teaches the spelling patterns versus memorizing words • It is customized to your child’s individual needs. • Spelling Groups • There will be groups similar to the reading groups that I will meet with each week • A word sort will be sent home at the beginning • of the week (every other week) • These are for you to sort various ways and practice with during the two weeks at home • We will use the same words for 2 weeks • Tests will be every other Friday • Early sorts may be pictures
Words Their Way (WTW) • We will be using www.spellingcity.com in the classroom and at home to review and practice our spelling words. This will be part of our weekly homework.
Word Wall Words (WWW) • We will have 5-6 new words each week • The words will be posted on my website • http://mcauliffe.lisd.net/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=220669&type=u • These words will also be posted on our word wall in the classroom • Students will need to be able to use the words in a sentence in context • I will read the test to them and help for the first few weeks • After that, I can only read words that are not word wall words.
Investigations- Math Curriculum • Investigations is hands-on, investigative, and focuses on problem-solving. • It is a core resource used by LISD to enable all children to understand and use mathematics to solve problems for life. • Our curriculum is divided into 9 units • It will focus on 3 critical areas • Understanding and applying place value • Solving problems with addition and subtraction • Shapes
Math-Excel • Supplemental math resource • Great spiraling and daily review • Excel can seem a little long and overwhelming at first
McAuliffe Folder • Sent home everyday/comes back everyday • Responsibility Chart stays in • Since our folder goes home everyday, please initial for each day so I know you saw the folder • If I have to sign it, I will write down what happened.
