1. THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs which fulfil an important function of removing excessive wastes and fluids from the body. In other words, they are the body’s filtering agents. If a kidney is unable to function properly, it results in accumulation of wastes in the blood. Kidney Transplant is a medical procedure in which the diseased or defective kidney is replaced by a healthy kidney taken from either a living or deceased donor. It is a treatment of last resort, performed in case of irreparable conditions and ailments such as chronic kidney failure. As a suggestion, one of the mosr reliable hospitals to visit in this dire scenario would be S.L Raheja Hospital, which is well-known in both national and international circles for its high-quality, reliable and robust kidney transplantation in Mumbai Kidney Transplant When a healthy kidney from a donor is transplanted on to the recipient’s body, the artery and vein from the donor kidney is connected to those of the recipient, and the ureter of the donor kidney is connected to the bladder of the recipient to enable the flow of urine. Kidney transplants have a high rate of success, provided there is a match between the donor and the recipient. In order to be eligible to donate a kidney, the donor must be healthy with no major diseases, such as diabetes. The donor can be a blood relative or a complete stranger. Symptoms And Conditions: Kidney Transplantation is performed in the event of kidney failure, which occurs due to the following reasons: Polycystic kidney disease: This is a genetic disorder in which many cysts develop within the kidneys, which results in enlargement of kidneys and loss of kidney function. This can also result in high blood pressure and kidney failure. Glomerulonephritis: An inflammation of the glomeruli, which are structures in the kidney made up of many blood vessels. Diabetes and high blood pressure: These two are often interconnected ailments, which in severe cases may result in kidney failure. Defects in the urinary tract: These may result in urinary reflux which can damage the kidney s and ureter over time, causing kidney failure.

2. Procedure: The steps involved in kidney transplant are: Step 1: Preliminary Tests: Theseare performed to check for the compatibilityof blood and to detect the presence of harmful viruses such as the HIV. Step 2: Meeting with Transplant Team: The transplant team briefs the patient regarding the feasibility, advantages, possible complications and risks. A transplant coordinator serves as the patient’s point of contact. A nephrologist performs the physical examination of the patient after the surgery and a deititian ensures the patient receives adequate nutrition before and after the transplant. Step 3: Recovery After The Surgery The recipient is given immunosuppressants to reduce the efficiency of his/her immune system in order to facilitate the acceptance of the new kidney. The immunosuppressants may have certain side-effects such as diabetes, cataracts, weight gain etc. The anti-rejection drugs may also increase the risk of skin cancer and cervical cancer. In case the new kidney doesn’t start functioning immediately, the patient is put on dialysis for the interim time period. Why S.L. Raheja? S.L.
