A guide to Health &Safety Procedures The Health and Safety at Work act 1974 states that employees are required to take reasonable care for the health & safety of themselves and of others who may be affected by their acts or omissions at work and co-operate with their employer so far as it is necessary to enable them to carry out their statutory duty. In respect of this the following must be adhered to. Any employee found to be in breach will be subject to an investigative interview which could lead to disciplinary action. Health and Safety at Work!

  4. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Fire Safety Fire alarm test is carried out on a weekly bases, fire exits should not be jammed in the open or closed position. Fire extinguishers must not be used as door stops, these exits must be kept clear at all times. Fire assembly points can be located in the area of the front and rear gates. First Aid The company has provided training for a number of first aiders, a list of trained first aiders can be located on the canteen notice board. First aid boxes can be located in the Department offices. Accidents & Hazards All accidents must be reported immediately. An accident report must be completed and witness statements recorded. To make and entry into the Branch Accident Book, please contact your line manager. Management must be informed of all workplace hazards immediately. A hazards constitutes anything that could result in injury or damage to staff or property.

  5. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Vests and Footwear Health & Safety guidelines dictate that only Orange & Yellow High Visibility vests or jackets may be worn by drivers. If your vest is not in compliance please speak with your Supervisor for a replacement. High Visibility Vests or Jackets must be worn at all times while working within the main Warehouse, and yard areas. The colours used by EMND are as follows: ORANGE – Warehouse, Office Staff, Management and Supervisory Team. YELLOW – Contractors and Agency Staff. Safety footwear must be worn at all times by employees while working in the Warehouse and yard.

  6. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Smoking Mobile Phones Safety Knives Only safety knives supplied by the company are permitted to be used. Ring knives or other unshielded blades (including scissors) are not permitted. Smoking is only permitted within the designated smoking area. (The smoking shelter). Personal audio equipment or mobile phone Bluetooth equipment is not permitted within the warehouse or yard areas.

  7. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Walkways All walkways must be kept clear at all times. Pallets, Roll Cages, and waste bins must not be left in the walkways for any reason. Where forklift trucks need to cross walkways the pedestrian has the right of way.

  8. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Fast Action Doors Blue Fast Action doors are for forklift trucks and vehicles only. Pedestrians are not permitted to use these doors under any circumstances.

  9. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures Parking One Way System Belfast Branch operates a strict ONE WAY traffic flow. This must be adhered to at all times. Please pay attention to all signage and road markings. All staff vehicles must be parked within the Staff Car Park. Goods vehicles only are permitted to park at the rear of the building. Staff Contractors and visitors using the car park do so at their own risk.

  10. A guide to Health & Safety Procedures House Keeping All waste must be placed in the bins provided. This includes pallet wrapping, strapping loops, backing paper from sticky labels etc. All staff are responsible for keeping the workplace tidy throughout their shift. Drinks cans and cups must not be placed on the PBL workstations, HS lines, Axon scanners, Strapping machines or any other electrical appliance or ducting. Forklift & PPT's Forklift Trucks and Powered Pallet Trucks may only be operated by those staff trained and authorised in writing by Branch Management to do so. If you feel that an operator is not showing due care and attention then Management or a member of the Supervisory team must be informed immediately. Equipment Equipment should only be operated by those who have been trained and authorised by Branch Management to do so. Management must be informed of any damage or defective equipment and property immediately. Employees must not attempt to repair any equipment unless they have received formal training.
