  2. It’s not easy being a parent…

  3. We want our children to be confident risk takers

  4. We also want them to be safe STOP

  5. Fortunatelychildren who learn how to take risks will be safer

  6. They will also be more confident when facing new challenges

  7. Whatever they might be…

  8. The ‘risks’ don’t have to be extreme

  9. When they’re doing this...

  10. They think they’re doing this.

  11. Unfortunately, many grownups seem to think they’re doing this

  12. So for safety, the old equipment is ‘improved’

  13. But when things are made too safe, kids will find a way to make them interesting again

  14. Sometimes the slides and swings are removed altogether

  15. That removes the safety ‘problem’, though others may arise

  16. Of course if children are allowed to take risks there will be consequences…

  17. They may occasionally, sometimes, possibly Get hurt

  18. HURT!?!?

  19. Maybe. Because even though we love them, and want to protect them from, well, everything…

  20. We know we can’t.

  21. And it wouldn’t be good for them if we tried.

  22. Kids wear their battle scars with pride, as they should.

  23. They are proof of great adventures and feats of survival

  24. No, really.

  25. So how is a parent to encourage (mostly) safe risk taking?

  26. As we said in the beginning, it’s not easy. Like many things in life…

  27. It’s a balancing act

  28. So that some day they can fly
