  2. Norway has jurisdiction over sea areas approx. 6 times her land area. Norwegian Marine Management Plans Integratedmanagement plans adoptedfor all three main sea areas: The BarentsSea, theNorwegianSea and the North Seaand Skagerrak

  3. Integrated Management Planning– the Ecosystem Approach Purpose: To provide a framework for value creation through sustainable use of marine natural resources within the limits of sound ecosystems.

Cross-sectoral process The Government Ministry of Finance Ministry of Petroleum and Energy Ministry of the Environment Ministry of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs Ministry of Trade and Industry Ministry of Justice Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ministry of Labour Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development 2 advisory groups, 16 key agencies & research institutions

Particularly valuable and vulnerable areas & Framework for petroleum activities, Barents Sea • No petroleum activity in Lofoten area • No petroleum activity within 35 km from coast, 65 km zone round Bear Island and along the Arctic ice edge and the Polar front • No exploratory drilling within 65 km from coast and on Tromsøflaket bank area between1 March – 31 August

  9. Update The Integrated Management Plans to be updated on a regular basis. The first update of the Barents Sea – Lofoten plan carried out in 2011. A complete revision envisaged for 2020. Management plan for the Norwegian Sea presented in 2009 and for the North Sea – Skagerrak this year. => All Norwegian territorial waters covered. Integrated Ecosystem based management plans constitute the backbone of Norway’s Marine Management

Integrated Marine Management represents: • A tool to considerbothenvironmentalconcerns and economicativitythrough an ecosystemapproach • A tool to resolveconflictofinterestsbetweenactivities in a waythatsafeguardstheenvironment • A system for earlydetectionof negative impacts and implementationofmitigationmeasures • A system to consider and implementconservationmeasuresbeforenew areas areopened up for activity • A predictable framework for economic activities.
