  1. Connections Through Theme, Language, and Art Honors American Literature K. Matteson

  2. Directions • Consider your theme, symbol or character as it relates to Divergent. • Choose a piece of construction paper and several markers/crayons/colored pencils that you think you will need to create a visual representation of your theme/character. • While the music plays, create a piece of art. You must cover 90% of your construction paper with various colors, shapes, straight lines, curvy lines, dots, symbols, etc. YOU MUST NOT DRAW A PICTURE (tree, sun, moon, person, etc.) *** This part of the assignment is very simple: create an abstract piece of art that reflects your character or theme’s role in the novel/play.

  3. NEXT -We will place your art around the room (with the theme/character next to it), and each of you will receive a set of sticky notes. -Go around to each piece of art, and give each a title on a sticky note. YOUR TITLE MUST NOT INCLUDE THE CHARACTER OR THEME. As a matter of fact, your title may be totally unrelated to the theme/character.

  4. The Poem • When everyone has given your art a title, take your art and all of the sticky notes back to your desk. • Your job is to now compose a poem based on the original assigned theme/character. The trick is YOU MUST USE all but one of the SUGGESTED TITLES IN YOUR POEM. • You will, of course, need to add phrases and words to create your poem. At minimum, each poem should be at least 100 words. Rhyming is totally unnecessary, but you must include at least five poetic devices: • Repetition • Alliteration • Structured Pattern • Metaphor • Allusion • Simile • Personification • Imagery
