  1. Scholastic Art Challenge!

  2. You will select one of the images from this PowerPoint as inspiration for your art project • Read the directions carefully, because you are restricted to specific subjects and mediums • Your challenge is to create an artwork that can win a gold key in the Scholastic Art Competition!!!!!!

  3. Prepare a piece of paper with heavy watercolor washes and drips Next, create a portrait on top of the paper using chalk pastel Last, add an interesting background to add interest (in this case, the dead trees)

  4. Create an acrylic painting on wood panel (you must supply the panel) The subject should be some kind of everyday object (shoes, an interesting hat, a wrench, etc……) This should be highly realistic and life sized

  5. Create a pastel drawing of a musical instrument in an interesting angle Collage sheet music to create an interesting background *** you could also do a drawing of any other subject and college the background with a other materials (ex newspaper, magazine, etc.) ***

  6. Create a series of related drawings in pencil Then, collage your drawings on watercolor paper and add watercolor washes and drips

  7. Create a watercolor painting of a place starting with watercolor pencils Use only expressive colors to show the mood, or feeling, of the place

  8. Create a watercolor painting of an interesting article of clothing Use watercolor washes and drips to create a unique background Last, layer text or other images (such as clothing company logos) on top of your finished painting using charcoal, pencil or sharpie marker

  9. Using watercolor pencils, make a painting of reflective objects. Use interesting washes for the background. Define important areas with chalk pastel or white & black charcoal pencils

  10. Create a portrait in watercolor Your portrait should be a close-up and show an interesting expression Don’t shade at all!!!! Each value will blocked out individually (like a coloring book)…use this image to help you!!! Use exaggerated color to create mood

  11. First, create a layer of tissue paper on watercolor paper Draw a flower from different angles, overlapping your drawings Fill in each flower with watercolor…let the overlapped areas create blended colors Last, define the interesting areas with chalk pastel or black & white charcoal pencils

  12. Create a watercolor wash on a piece of watercolor paper Draw a functional object sitting on a surface (table, bench, box, etc.) using pencil & shade with watercolor Use chalk pastel to define the object

  13. Create a watercolor painting of flowers (do not use sunflowers!) Using sharpie marker, outline the edges that separate every value Add texture in the background using sharpie marker

  14. On one piece of paper, draw 5 portraits from life using only contour line. Do not lift your pencil off the paper at all! Later, make watercolor washes and drips to add interest and define the best sections of the drawing

  15. Create a portrait or self-portrait in pastel using only sepia tones (brown, red, tan, yellow) Show the person from an interesting angle (looking up, looking down, etc.) Make sure your subject fills the ENTIRE PAGE

  16. Create a portrait or self-portrait in CHARCOAL YOUR PORTRAIT MUST BE FROM A BIRDS-EYE-VIEW (SHOWN LOOKING UP, FROM ABOVE) YOUR PORTRAIT SHOULD FILL THE ENTIRE PAGE

  17. CREATE A DRAWING OF SOMEONE PLAYING A MUSICAL INSTRUMENT, BUT ONLY SHOW THEIR HANDS…THE DRAWING SHOULD SHOW THE MOTION INVOLVED IN PLAYING THE INSTRUMENT. Begin with watercolor pencils. Add chalk pastel at the end to define important areas.

  18. Create a self-portrait of you experiencing a magical transformation Your facer should fill the page Begin using watercolor pencil and add chalk pastel or charcoal at the end to create more contrast

  19. Create a close-up self-portrait that includes objects from an activity you enjoy (it could be ballet slippers, paint brushes, a video game controller, etc.) use VERY LIGHT pastel on colored paper.

  20. Create a close-up self-portrait from a worms-eye view (shown from below) You can use any medium

  21. Do a great job and this could be you, posing next to your award-winning artwork!
