About Mount St. Mary’s College • Private, Catholic, primarily women’s college • Founded by the Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet • The first baccalaureate of science in nursing program in California was established at Mount St. Mary’s College, graduating its first class in 1952. • The Accelerated BSN program was established in May 1995 and graduated the first cohort May 1996 and was the first of it’s kind west of the Rocky Mountains.

  9. Dr. Sister Callista Roy Developed Roy Nursing Model in 1976 at Mount Saint Mary’s College Dr. Roy is now a professor at Emeritus Boston College

Roy Adaptation Model • Developed by Sister Callista Roy CSJ, former chair of MSMC nursing department. • Used widely in the United States, Canada, Japan, and other countries. • The Roy adaptation model recognizes that a person is a bio-psycho-social-spiritual being in constant interaction with a dynamic and complex world.

  11. Program Schedule • Semester #1 • 20 units • Monday & Tuesday 7:00am to 4:00pm • theory courses • Wednesday, Thursday, Friday; 6:30am to 3:30pm or Wednesday & Friday 6:30am to 6:30pm • clinical rotations at the hospital

  12. Program Schedule • Semester #2 • 18 units of nursing & 3 units of Bioethics • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday • Clinical days (2 days each week) • 8 or 12 hour clinical rotations at hospital • Tuesday- 7am to 2pm- theory • Thursday- 7am to 4pm- theory

  13. Program Schedule • Semester #3 • 18 units • Monday & Wednesday (theory classes) • Mon. 7am to noon; Wed. 7am to 5pm • Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday • Clinicals (2 days a week)

Pre-requisites • Chemistry or Physics (with lab) 4 semester units • Human Anatomy (with lab) 4 semester units • Human Physiology (with lab) 4 semester units • Microbiology (with lab) 4 semester units **all four science courses must have been taken within the last 5 years** PLEASE NOTE: All quarter units will be converted into semester units. Online science classes with online/virtual labs will not be accepted.

Pre-requisites • Human Nutrition 3 semester units • General Psychology 3 semester units • Developmental (Lifespan) Psychology 3 semester units • Introduction To Sociology or Cultural Anthropology 3 semester units • Communication: • Written communication- Composition 6 semester units • Oral communication – Public Speaking 3 semester units

  17. Bioethics • There are upper division Phil. courses that are transferable for our Bioethics requirement. • UCLA: Phil 155 Medical Ethics • LMU: Phil 330 Cont. Moral Problems • Taylor Univ (Indiana): Phil 410E (online) These are just examples, you may email your admission counselor for a full list of approved courses. Counselor email will be provided at the end of presentation.

Selection Process • Pg. 3, ‘Personal Statement’: Be sure to answer all 4 questions • Why are you choosing a career in nursing now? • What experiences have you had in the health care field? • What are your short and long term goals? • How have you planned (financially and personally) for the year of full time study in this accelerated program?

  20. Selection Process • Letters of Reference • Two letters needed on official letterhead. • At least one academic reference from someone who can speak to your ability to succeed in an academically rigorous and fast paced program.

  21. Interviews Applicants that complete the application process on-time and meet our minimum GPAmay be contacted by the Nursing department to schedule an interview Interviews are usually conducted in January and May

  25. Applying For Financial Aid Apply for financial aid at the same timeyou are applying for admission. Or once you have been accepted into the program. Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

  26. Free Application For Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) • Apply online: www.fafsa.ed.gov • 1-2 weeks processing time • Include Mount St. Mary’s School Code: 001243 so we receive your FAFSA information.

After being admitted into the program, you will receive a Financial Aid Offer from the Student Financing Office once we have received… Beginning in Summer; You must complete the 2014/2015 FAFSA for the Summer semester and an additional 2015/2016 FAFSA for the Fall/ Spring semesters. Beginning in Fall; You must complete the 2015/2016 FAFSA for the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.

  28. Annual Costs for 2013- 2014 Accelerated Nursing 12 month program Tuition & Fees: $59,339 **Please note tuition usually increases 3-5% every year** Room and Board: $15,000-16,000

  29. Types of Financial Aid 1. Federal Stafford Loans: Students are eligible for up to $25,000 for the program. This may include federal subsidized and unsubsidized loans. Repayment begins six months after graduation. • Federal Subsidized Loans: The federal government pays the interest while you are in college. • Federal Unsubsidized Loans: The borrower pays the interest six months after he/she has graduated. Repayment begins six months after graduation.

  30. Types of Financial Aid 2. Alternative/Private Loans: • Supplemental educational financing up to the cost of attendance. • Private loans are based on credit. The student has option to apply with a co-signer. Apply by phone or online. Repayment occurs six months after graduation.

  31. Types of Financial Aid 3. Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Scholarships The scholarship program aims to help alleviate the nursing shortage and to increase the diversity of nursing professionals. Mount St. Mary's College has been selected as a grant recipient of the program for six consecutive years (2008-2013). Scholarships are approximately $10,000 each. Eligibility Requirements: Are from groups that are underrepresented in nursing or from a disadvantaged background (e.g., underrepresented racial or ethnic minority, financially disadvantaged); Must be U.S. Citizens, Resident Non-Citizen Nationals, or Resident Foreign Nationals; Have been accepted in Mount St. Mary’s College ABSN program.

  32. Types of Financial Aid 4. Forgivable Loan Program: Applied to the last two semesters of the program. Kaiser Scholarship Northridge Hospital Scholarship Torrance Memorial Scholarship - Students must first be accepted into the Accelerated BSN program in order to be eligible to apply for this scholarship. - To be considered for either Scholarship an application needs to be filled out and then an interview will be set up. If you accept the scholarship and work for 2 - 2 1/2 years once you graduate, the loan or “scholarship” is forgiven. This means you do not have to pay it back.

Application Checklist • Accelerated BSN • Complete Application • Personal statement • Two Letters of References (at least one must be academic) • Official college transcripts (from every college attended) • GPA- 3.0 Cumulative • Application Fee $20- online application **Please note: We only accept on-line applications for this program.

Common issues that disqualify candidates: • Missing or late transcripts • Not submitting up-to-date transcripts • Missing or late letters of reference • Reactivation forms without Self Reporting Checklist and Updated Personal Statement Facts Regarding Admission The Office of Admission receives over 300 applications for 40 spaces; therefore your applications and all supporting documents application must be complete on or before the deadline. No exceptions will be made.

  39. Application Deadline October 15 for Summer March 1 for Fall You may apply even if you are in the process of completing pre-requisites. However, all pre-requisites must be completed by the start date of the Accelerated BSN Program.

Transcripts • We will need official transcripts from all the colleges attended, including: • Community College/ University attended before your degree • University where you obtained your degree • Foreign Transcripts from study-abroad program • Official Transcripts from all foreign study • Transcripts from Graduate or Professional degree • Transcripts from vocational program I.e. C.N.A, Massage, Phlebotomy, E.M.T • Community college/ University attended after degree • Transcripts for courses taken prior to application deadline **Mount St. Mary’s College requires transcripts to be sent from institution to institution to be considered official**

Check your application status • MSMC Web Portal • A few days after you submit your application, you will get an email about MSMC Web Portal • The MSMC Web Portal will display announcements, document status, application status, and required documents for the program if admitted Please note: we receive a lot of documents 2 weeks before and after deadline, so it takes longer during that time for items to be reflected in WebAdvisor

FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Associate Degree in Nursing – 2 to 3 years • Evening or afternoon classes, clinicals on weekends • GPA minimums: 2.75 overall and 2.5 overall in all required sciences • To be considered for admissions, applicants must take the T.E.A.S exam. • Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • RN to BSN Completion Program – 12 months • Evening nursing classes, general study classes taken in Weekend College • GPA minimums: 2.8 overall and 2.5 overall in all required sciences • Preceptorships to be determined with Nursing Faculty Advisor • Pre-Nursing option available (NCLEX-RN must be completed within 6 months) • Starts in Fall and Spring of each year

  46. FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS • CHALON • Traditional BSN Program- 3 to 4 years • Classes and Clinicals during daytime hours • 32 units of prerequisites • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Science GPA of 2.7 • Starts Fall of each year

  47. FOUR NURSING PROGRAMS • DOHENY • Accelerated BSN Program – 12 months • Must have Bachelors Degree • 46 units of prerequisite courses • Overall GPA of 3.0 or greater • Starts May and August of each year

  48. Please Remember… • The Nursing Departments govern admission practices and policies. The Office of Admission processes files and must adhere to the rules set forth by the departments. • Your evaluation begins the moment you inquire. Please be mindful of your attitude towards all faculty and staff. We make note of your interactions, both positive and negative, and they can affect your admission. • A wise woman once said, “Lack of preparation on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.”
