In this lesson, we will classify substances like sodium, sodium chloride, salt water, and salted pretzels by identifying them as elements, compounds, and mixtures. Additionally, we'll focus on learning how to convert between temperature scales as part of our ongoing chemistry studies. We will also highlight aluminum as the "Element of the Day," discussing its unique properties, the importance of recycling, and its prevalence compared to other elements. Students are reminded to review lab worksheets and prepare for upcoming quizzes and assignments.

Warm up 10/3/13 • Question: Classify: Sodium, Sodium Chloride, Salt Water, Salted Pretzel • Answer: • Element (sodium), Compound (sodium chloride), Homogenous Mixture (salt water), Heterogeneous mixture (pretzel) • Goal: I will learn to convert between temperature scales.
ELEMENT OF THE DAY • 13 – Aluminum – Al • Aluminum was once rarer and more expensive than gold, even though it is the 3rd most common element in Earth’s crust. • Aluminum is an almost ideal metal – it is cheap, lightweight, sturdy and its rust is actually harder than aluminum itself. • Recycling Aluminum uses significantly less energy than refining new aluminum.
Attendance / Bellwork • Career Scope Reminder • Review Lab / Worksheets • Prep Sand & Salt • Temperature Scales • Tests back • Homework Agenda
Homework • Packet pg30-32 (31 & 32 were started in class) • Write procedures for sand & salt (pgH) – check website for help • Quiz Weds 10/9 (ch 10.1)
