  2. Today we will: • Learn how to plan and execute a search (search strategy) • Discuss CINAHL • Locate articles through the Library

  3. Research Strategy • Getting Started • Determine vocabulary or terms that relate to your subject • Write down keywords or subject headings after consulting a subject thesaurus

  4. Research Strategy • Formulate search by breaking into variables, for example: Does patient education help prevent diabetes? diabetes Patient education Prevent

  5. Research StrategyCreate search statements using Boolean operators • AND narrows a search example: diabetes and patient education and prevent • OR broadens a search example: stroke or diabetes • NOT excludes terms from a search example: United States not Canada

  7. Truncation Truncation symbols or wildcards or plural searching (examples: *, #, !, ?, +) • Allows you to search for terms with multiple endings e.g. diabet* searches for diabetes, diabetic e.g. prevent* searches for prevent, prevents, prevention, preventing

  8. Search Tips • What to do if you get too much? Use Limit options Search a specific field, e.g. subject headings or title or abstract Special modifiers (if available) Combine searches or add more concepts • What to do if you get too few? Eliminate concepts Related articles link in PubMed Look at bibliography or references

  16. Using CINAHL (important things to know before you use it) • Is web accessible – even home! (but only 8 simultaneous users) • Contains citations and sometimes abstracts & full text from scholarly nursing & allied health journals, book chapters, government documents, dissertations, etc. & SFX link • Some records include the cited references

  17. Searching Specific Fieldsvs Default Fields Subject searching • Searches only words used to describe articles • Excellent way to refine a search especially if you started with keyword “default fields searching” • Headings change throughout time so check CINAHL Headings
