  1. Israel: Separation Between Church and State Starr Perlman May 13, 2011 World History; 8

  2. Background Information • Israel was created as a place for the Jews to settle • The Jews claim to land dates back 3,000 years ago, ever since they were forced out of Egypt. • The Palestinians (both Christian and Muslim) believe that the land belongs to them since the Jews were driven out in A.D 135. • Jews, Islam, and Christians all believe Jerusalem (a city in Israel) to be holy.

  3. Issue • Israel does not have a strong separation between their religion and government which causes religious tensions Political cartoon showing that there isn’t a strong barrier between religion and state.

  4. Argument • Not having this separation is inexcusable because of Israel’s religious diversity and intense practice of religion throughout the country. • Religious diversity • Strong religious beliefs cause tensions • Many Religious wars

  5. FactsThe Law of Return • Grants automatic citizenship to anyone who has Jewish ancestry (father or grandfather) or is born Jewish (mother or grandmother). • This is unfair because: • Israel claims to have religious freedom, therefore they should not grant automatic citizenship based on faith • The government needs to recognize individualistic faith

  6. FactsReligious Wars • The government has not stepped in to create a peaceful society when it comes to religious practices • Example: • Many Jewish citizens believe that all shops should be closed on Shabbat (Saturday, which is devoted to worship and rest) • Other citizens who follow other religions believe they shouldn’t sacrifice their Saturday for a holiday they don’t practice.

  7. ImagesReligious Wars Tens of thousands of ultra-Orthodox Jews protested in Jerusalem, Israel against a court order to desegregate a religious school and force Jewish girls and boys to study together.

  8. FactsGovernment • Many elections have become based on religion not based on what is best for the people. • The government tends to favor certain religious groups which creates inequality.

  9. ImagesGovernment Peace will never be achieved if the government allows religious inequality among citizens.

  10. IssuesGovernment Issues Today • The Palestinian Authority has taken steps to limit the freedom of religion • Palestinian Authority, has no law in force protecting religious freedoms. • Isr

  11. Map Religious Sites. The government today, according to the Israeli Project, limits who can go in and out of these sites.

  12. Images & Charts Adapted from: www.mfa.gov

  13. Quiz Questions • What religion considers Jerusalem to be a holy city? • Jews • Muslims • Christians • All of the above 2. What does the Law of Return State? 3. Jews claim that Israel is their land, why? 4. What is the government like today?
