Contribution to the Civil War • Helped the abolitionist movement by making many Northerners realize the reality of slavery and the cruelty of the Fugitive Slave Law • Lead to many perceived stereotypes of blacks throughout America • Outraged Southerners and slave owners, many claimed the novel to be criminal and slanderous

Harriet Beecher Stowe • Stowe was born in1811 and died in1896 • She had 3 sisters and 5 brothers • She married to Calvin Ellis Stowe in 1836 • She first encountered slaver in Cincinnati in 1832 • Had a servant girl who she thought was a freed slave until her previous owner started hunting for her, her brother drove the girl to a friend’s house overnight to hide
