  2. Money! Coins! Cents!

  3. Pennies and Nickels

  4. Penny Pennies are round and made of copper. A penny is worth one cent, and you count each one individually. If you have three pennies, you have three cents.

  5. Nickel A nickel is silver and round. It is slightly bigger then a penny. A nickel is worth five cents, and you count each one using skip counting by fives. For example: 5, 10, 15, and so on. If you have three nickels you will have fifteen cents.

  6. Lets Go Shopping! 5+1+1=7 One nickel plus two pennies equals seven cents. • You go to the store and want to buy a pack of gum that costs seven cents. • How many nickels plus pennies is this?

  7. Are You Hungry? 5+5+1+1+1=13 Two nickels and three pennies equals thirteen cents. You go to the cafeteria and want to buy an ice-cream cone. Today they are on sale for only thirteen cents. How many nickels and pennies do you need?

  8. Now that’s a Deal! 1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1+1=10 Ten pennies equal ten cents! It happens to be dime movie day at the theater. However you do not have a dime, you only have pennies. How many pennies do you need to see a movie that is worth ten cents?

  9. Lucky Day! 1+1+1+1+5+5=14 Four pennies plus two nickels equals fourteen cents! You have four pennies in your pocket. You are walking to class and find two nickels on the floor! How much money is in your pocket now?

  10. Lost a Tooth! 5+0=5 One nickel was left because you lost one tooth. One nickel is worth five cents! Last night while eating dinner you lost a tooth! While you were asleep, the tooth fairy came to visit and gave you one nickel under your pillow for each tooth. How much money did she leave you?

  11. Bubbles! 5+1=6 One nickel plus one penny equals six cents! You are at the store and want to buy a container of bubbles to blow outside. At the checkout, the clerk tells you that it costs six cents. How many pennies plus nickels is this?

  12. Money Quiz Take out a clean sheet of notebook paper and label it 1-10 down the left hand column. Write your name at the top. This is an individual quiz, so keep your eyes on your own paper. You may use your own play money to solve the answers. If you need help, raise your hand.

  14. Time is Up! Switch papers with someone in the room. Take out a red or pink crayon to grade your partners paper. If you are grading the paper, write your own name at the bottom. If the answer is correct, write a check. If the answer is not correct, circle it, and then write in the correct answer next to it. Lets begin!

  15. Answers in Gold! Three pennies equal 3 cents! One nickel plus two pennies equal 7 cents! One nickel equals 5 cents! One penny equals 1 cent! Ten pennies plus one nickel equal 15 cents! Four nickels equal 20 cents! How many pennies equal seven cents? Seven Pennies! How many nickels equal ten cents? Two Nickels! One nickel plus one penny equals 6 cents! Five nickels plus five pennies equals 30 cents!
