The future of humanity Stacey Sing
Civilizations • Physicists have always ranked civilizations by the energy they consume • Type 1: Planetary, consuming the sliver of sunlight that falls on the planet • Type 2: Stellar which consumes all the energy the sun emits • Type 3: Galactic, consuming the energy of a billion stars • Present day : 0.7 civilization
Transitioning to type 1 • See this everyday and the decisions we make as a society effect the transition into a unsure path. • Planetary phone system: Internet • Loss of cultures: due to a lingua franca and a planetary culture
Internet • A quarter of humanity has used the internet in their lifetimes • Become a necessity and see it everywhere ! • Pros: social networks, fast information in the palm of your hand, globally connected. • Cons: personal information is not always secure, hackers/ identity theft, all the new technology is updated and everyone wants the new “hot item” . • E waste : these toxic compounds can leach into soil and water, polluting lakes and streams and making them unfit for drinking, swimming, fishing, and supporting wildlife.
loss of cultures • Lingua Franca: a language that is adopted as a common language between speakers whose native languages are different. • English is already looking an emerging Type 1 language • Spoken on every continent and the de facto planetary language of science, finance, business, and entertainment. • Uniformity leads to loss of cultural richness • No matter where you travel you find evidence of the same cultural trends in music, art, and fashion
Solutions • Getting informed is the key ! Be aware ! • Government regulations on production • Nanotechnology gives us the opportunity to reduce waste heat even further as machines are miniaturized to the atomic scale. • Important that we transition safely and take care of our home because the transition is extremely dangerous and perhaps the greatest. It will determine whether we continue to thrive or flourish
