  2. Women in pre-war Britain If women did work they were usually low paid- RELIANT ON MEN Women were expected to marry, have children and look after the home Women could not vote They had very few job opportunities Pre-war Britain was a PATRIACHAL SOCIETY

  3. Women in 1918 Women wore make-up, had daring hairstyles and new clothes Millions of women worked in essential industries Women over 30 could vote Women had disposable income 1918 had seen Britain adopt a much changed position towards women... Why?

Women’s lives changed because of recruitment and conscription • Women were needed to fill the gaps left by men joining the armed forces • Create a large copy of the table on page 133 and complete using sources D,E,F,G,H,I & J • Draw your own judgement line and indicate how much you think attitudes towards women changed as a result of the war • “Recruitment and conscription of men was the main reason for the changes in the lives of women between 1914-1918.” Do you agree? Explain your answer

Political position There were some developments, women over the age of 30 were given the vote in 1918 but it wasn’t until 1928 that women over the age of 21 were given the vote like their male counterparts.
