  1. Tools You Can Use to Become More Optimistic

  2. When Tim Dowling of The Guardian took it upon himself to be more optimistic in just one week, he turned to life coach and psychologist Dr Sally Ann Law for advice. “Develop a habit of making a note at the end of each day of at least three things that went well,” she said, “to help train your brain to notice the good stuff rather than focusing on the not-so-good stuff.” Law’s advice echoes the advice of many in her field, and indeed, the practice of keeping a so-called “gratitude” journal has helped many alter their outlook on life. Gratitude journals are not the only tools available to those seeking to become more optimistic, however, and another tool is one that you already use every day. “Become as self-aware as possible about the language you use in your own head when you’re thinking about some adversity or setback,” Law wrote to Dowling. For example, when Dowling would catch himself using words such as “disaster” and “dreadful”, he replaced them with words such as “challenge” and “unhelpful”. Language, the very same language we use to communicate every day, can be tweaked and turned into a powerful tool that can reframe your own thinking.

  3. Of course, it should be noted that these tools won’t necessarily provide instantaneous results. They’re also not enough to change attitudes on their own. “Remember that although our brains are plastic and therefore we can change to some extent, we have to be realistic,” Law says. But there’s no saying that realism can’t be accompanied by even just a little more optimism. Ready to be inspired?
