What is a septic tank? • A septic tank consists of two major components: • The septic tank which should be a container for all sewerage/effluent and wastewater. • The liquid or effluent disposal system which in most cases is a subsurface soil absorption system. • An efficient septic tank system should bring about the digestion of organic matter and discharge the liquid effluent into the subsurface absorption field, where it is treated by natural microbiological processes in the soil.

  11. No chemical additives are needed to assist septic tank processes. Normal amounts of domestic bleach, caustic materials, soaps, detergents and drain cleaners do not impede the bacterial processes. Materials such as sanitary napkins, facial tissues, coffee grounds, cooking oil and cigarette butts should not be flushed into the septic tanks as they do not degrade and clog the system.

  12. The tank needs very little routine maintenance and services should last for many years but should be emptied at regular intervals to prevent overflowing. Emptying the tank is called desludeging.

Things to note when pumping... • Blockages between the septic tank and french drain is common, and you would need a plumber to unblock after we pumped and before you use the system again. • If you haven’t pumped your tank in 3 years, it’s advisable that you have a plumber there to clear all blockages in the pipes when we pump your tank. • Know where your tank lid is situated before phoning to save a call-out fee. • We can refer you to registered plumbers in your area.

Grease Traps can be found in run off areas at car washes, logistical companies, engineering and companies that deal in the automotive sector. The pollution to the water could include oil, petrol, detergents and other chemicals.

  22. The disposal of this waste can only be concluded by a private company Environmental Services who does testing of samples before accepting any waste. Honeysucker Sanitation is situated in Tarlton.
