  1. The Simple Past We use the Simple Past to talk about something that happened in the past But we must say w h e n e.g. Socrates lived in Athens in the 5th century B.C.

  2. You form the simple past of a verb by adding -ed onto the end of a regular verb but, irregular verb forms have to be learned.

  3. +ed climb climbed play played talk talked walk walked wash washed watch watched

  4. + d The verbs ending in –e do not take –ed, but only -d close closed like liked live lived phone phoned

  5. +ied The verbs that end in –y and before that there is a consonant, they turn –y into -ied carry carried cry cried study studied try tried

  6. + lled The verbs that end in –l, double their –l in the Simple Past travel travelled

  7. no change cost cost cut cut hit hit read read shut shut put put

  8. be was I He was She It

  9. be were You were We They

  10. I was a football player in 1992.

  11. They were in an office yesterday.

  12. Interrogative and negative form In the interrogative and negative form they use did and didn’t but the verb doesn’t take the ending –ed e.g. I walked to school yesterday.Did you walk to school yesterday?I didn’t walk to school yesterday.

  13. It can be used to describe events that happened over a period of time in the past but not now. For example: "I livedin South Africa for two years." • The simple past tense is also used to talk about habitual or repeated actions that took place in the past. For example: "When I was a child we always went to the seaside on bank holidays."
