  2. Aims of this Presentation • To inform you of the quality of the midwiferystudent experience at Middlesex University • To explore your expectations of the role of the midwifery student at degree level • To assist you on your journey of becoming a degree level midwife

  3. Expectations of a Midwife • Caring for women and their families during pregnancy and childbirth • Working and collaborating with others to ensure excellent care for women during pregnancy, labour, their babies & beyond

  4. What are the careers in Midwifery? Midwifery/ Clinical research work Working in hospital or community (or both) Midwifery education Ward Managers or Midwife Consultants Specialist midwives e.g. high risk care, young people, vulnerable adults Continuing Professional Development opportunities at Middlesex: e.g. Master’s Level and then Doctorate

  5. What do we mean by Degree Level? As a degree midwife you will need to develop and demonstrate skills in: • Critical analysis • Decision making • Leadership and management • Clinical judgement

  6. Expectations of you – NHS values • Put women and their families first - care for women and babies as individuals with compassion, listen and act on their views, keep their safety and needs at the heart of your actions • Respect others and yourselves • Strive to be the best and promote quality and efficiency • Act as an advocate for the woman and baby • Take pride in your midwifery care • Act with integrity and demonstrate the ability to meet NMC Essential skills – Care, Compassion and Communication

Shortened Programme (18 months) • 1st 6 months – focus is on study skills and on normal midwifery • 2nd 6 months – Care of complex needs of mother and baby • 3rd 6 months – focus is on dealing with emergencies and deviations from normal • Final 12 week consolidation of clinical midwifery practice

Programme Requirements • Set by the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) • Currently programme is 50% theory and 50% practice • 78 week programme = 37.5 hours per week • All sickness or absence must be made up in order to fulfil the NMC requirement • Ten days or more sickness/absence in any one year could lead to discontinuation or deferral • A poor sickness/absence record could have implications for future employment – even if you have made up all the time owed

Shortened Midwifery ProgrammeYear Plan 50% Theory & 50% Practice = 37.5 hours per week Induction period to the university; programme and clinical placement Out of midwifery practice Gynaecology (1 week) & NNU (3 weeks) Practice Placements 24/7 shift patterns & on calls • Reading weeks • A variety of assessments – clinical and academic University weeks studying modules – 0900 – 1600 hours • Annual leave = 10 weeks

  18. Salary • NHS starting salaries for graduates with midwifery degrees start on over £21,388 a year with opportunity to earn more with overtime and other additional payments, which compares very well with other public sector jobs. • The highest paid NHS nurses/midwives can earn up to £97,500 as nurse consultants or consultant midwives or directors of nursing/midwifery
