  9. Introduction The Free State Department of Health started implementing a new criteria for Community Health Worker (CHW) Program as of September 2014. The criteria for admission is as follows: Matric certificate Proficiency in two languages- English & a local language 21-55 years old South African citizen Physically fit to walk distances The CHWs are expected to work strictly in the community and not in the facilities, in line with the PHC Re-Engineering

Stipend payment 9 NGOs have been awarded contracts which are reviewed annually for three years as of Feb 2016 The NGOs are contracted to manage the administration and HR issues of the cadres, incl. stipend payment, monitor and supervise their activities for community based services The date of reporting by NGOs has been changed to facilitate timeous payment of stipend and payments are now done on time

  11. Continued The 915 Community Care Givers are receiving a stipend of R1850 pm, according to the Ministerial determination. The 594 Community Health Workers are receiving R1900 pm The 104 Enrolled Nursing Assistants and 44 Enrolled Nurses, who provide clinical support to CHWs, are getting R3000pm They are Outreach Team Leaders (OTL). Stipend payment is only done after receiving the reports on the work done.

  12. Update on training of CHWs The training plan is according to the need for coverage of Family Health Teams in the Wards. Training has commenced in the districts, since 2011 96 CHWs from Lejweleputswa were trained in Phase 1 in 2011

  13. Update on training of CHWs cont. From 2011 to 2014 they were in the wards, coached by OTLs Assessment on Phase 1 was done in 2014 36 were competent and proceeded to Phase 2 in 2014 In July 2015, 36 learners commenced with the training for the qualification

Continued 61 failed initial assessment,32 were re-assessed in 2016 Additional 58 CCGs were trained in Phase 1 in March 2016 They will be assessed in December 2016 The training of 11 CCGs from Soutpan is scheduled for Nov 2016 on CHW Program 4 CCGs have been trained on HIV Counselling & testing in March 2016 The 11 CCGs will be trained on TB Management in August 2016
