  1. Four Approaches to Viewing Other Faiths (a Christian example)

  2. Exclusivist • The only path to God and salvation is through following Jesus Christ • Jesus is the only mediator between God and humanity • Membership in the Christian community is essential to salvation • Those who do not commit to faith in Jesus may be excluded from God’s love and plan

  3. Inclusivist • Jesus’ life and message brought reconciliation for the world • There is room for salvation for those who do not specifically worship Jesus • The grace of Jesus is present for all people who experience God’s love and mercy • Jesus is wisdom in which all things will be restored

  4. Pluralist • There are many paths to God • Jesus is the way for Christians but not necessarily for everyone • No single religion can speak about God’s ultimate truth • Our relationship with other faiths is to be based on respect • Cooperation is necessary for the common good

  5. Transformationist • No single religion has a monopoly of truth • Christianity is constantly evolving • Christians can learn from encounters with other faiths • Respectful dialogue and mutual learning may lead to transformation for everyone
