  1. Assignment #3 Network Components

  2. Hub A hub is used for connecting many Ethernet devices together . A hub works on the physical layer (layer #1). It works by taking information received at one port and repeating/duplicating it to all other ports except the original. A hub would be useful in small networks where traffic is less of a concern. Price - $8.00 - $100.00

  3. Switch A switch like a hub connects multiple computers together on a network. Each component that is connected is identified by a MAC address The difference between a hub and a switch is that a switch doesn’t send the same information to all computers connected but to only the one that request that information. This information is passed along via a method called packet switching. Switches are often used in larger LANs. Price - $8.00 – $1,200.00 depending on the number of ports.

  4. Router A router takes data packets which it receives from the internet to the home network. A router also connect networks across the internet as it is able to pass data packets onto the next network until it reaches its destination. A router is used in most homes and small business. Prince - $20.00 - $200.00

  5. Bridge A bridge takes two distinct networks and “bridges” them together. They no longer function as two independent networks but as one. A bridge is very similar to both the hub and a switch. The difference is in that a bridge is mainly for LAN devices that employ Ethernet MAC addresses. The main function of a bridge is to inspect incoming messages and spend them to the to the correct location Price - $30.00 - $1,000.00

  6. Gateway The purpose of a gateway is to connect two networks together. Network gateways can work on all levels of the OISI model. On home networks a gateway is usually implemented within the router, to make things simple. Price - $50.00 - $1,000.00 +

  7. Firewall A firewall is a network based security system. Many times it can software that is placed on a personal computer that protects incoming and outgoing traffic that may or may not be trusted. Firewall are important and used by corporations, individuals, and families. $40.00 (software) - $600.00 (appliance)

  8. Wireless AP A wireless AP is a device that allows any device to connect to the Internet via a wifi signal. Wireless APs are used across most settings. Corporations may use them to provide wireless access across their LAN or to even create a hotspot at a local business like Starbucks. A wireless AP is also used by most ISPs to provide wireless access for residential homes. Price - $35.00 - $200.00
