  1. Take a few minutes and define the following terms: • Culture? • American Culture?

  2. What do you see as the greatest challenge to American culture? • Has this challenge always been present? • If so, why? • If not, what brought it into our world?

  3. Changes to youth during your lifetime? • Since 1989, what has been some of the greatest (good or bad) changes to students and their school experiences? • Why? • How are disputes solved?

  4. Columbine 4/20/99 • How many of you are familiar with the events at Columbine, and those similar after it (i.e. Virginia Tech)? • Is American Culture truly to blame? • Can events like this be avoided? • Do we now overreact as a result of this? • Was this the parents’ fault?

  5. Quotes • Father of Columbine victim: I am here today because my son Daniel would want me to be here today. If my son Daniel was not one of the victims, he would be here with me today. Something is wrong in this country when a child can grab a gun, grab a gun so easily, and shoot a bullet into the middle of a child's face, as my son experienced. Something is wrong. But the time has come to come to understand that a Tech-9 semi-automatic -bullet weapon like that, that killed my son, is not used to kill deer. It has no useful purpose. It is time to address this problem.

  6. Does one lead to the other?

  7. Bullying • Is this part of the American Cultural experience? • A rite of passage? • Is it the true cause of the troubles? • What can be done?

  8. NJ’s new laweffective 9/1/11 • Every school district must adopt a new harassment, intimidation and bullying policy that is in compliance with the act by 9/1/11 • There are new positions that are created within each district

  9. HIB • How to determine if it is bullying • Motivated by an “actual or perceived characteristic” (race, religion, ancestry, sexual preference) • Behavior disrupts substantially with the orderly operation of the school or the rights of the children • Reasonable person should know this behavior would “have the effect of physically or emotionally harming a pupil or damaging the pupil’s property” • Has the effect of insulting or demeaning a pupil or group of pupils • Creates a hostile educational environment • Does extend to off school grounds

  10. Your thoughts • Does this new law go too far? Or • Is it for the benefit of the student body as a whole and can truly curb bullying behavior? • Does the law place the responsibility in the appropriate location?

  11. Assignment-50 pts • Use the laptops with a partner to create a viable argument. • Half of you will support the law, and the other half will not. • Explain in a written rationale (with at least 5 points) the benefits or the draw backs of the law. • Be prepared to discuss and hand in on Friday
