  4. Filipinos Rebel • Aguinaldo is captured in 1901. • The U.S. defeated the rebels.

  5. Reforms lead to Promise of Self-Rule • 1901 • William Howard Taft became governor of the Philippines.

  6. Taft • To maintain order: • Censored the press • Placed dissidents in jail.

  7. Jones Act • Pledged the Philippines would eventually win their independence. • Would liberate them. • Became independent after WWII.

  8. The U.s. Pursues interests in china • European powers had carved out “spheres on influence” in China.

  9. Spheres of influence • A weaker country in a sphere of influence when it grants the larger country trade privileges and other benefits.

  10. John Hay • U.S. Secretary of State • U.S. expected “perfect equality of treatment for commerce” in China.

  11. Boxer rebellion • Members of a Chinese secret society against foreigners and Christians in China.

  12. Hay • Reasserted America’s Open Door Policy. • Did not want colonies, just free trade.

  13. Roosevelt • Roosevelt wins the Nobel Peace Prize for helping Russia and Japan sign the Russo Japanese War peace treaty.

  14. Anti-Asian prejudice • West Coast of the United States. • San Fran School Board banned Chinese, Japanese, & Korean children from attending school with white children.

  15. Japan upset about treatment • Roosevelt negotiated a “Gentlemen’s Agreement” • U.S. to end it’s segregation policy if Japan limited emigration to the U.S.

  16. Great white fleet • Concerned about Japan’s expansion in Asia… • Roosevelt had a new force of white battleships built. • Sent them on a cruise around the world.
