  1. Changes to Type-of-Material Scoping and Limitingin the OPAC Approved Summer 2005 to be implemented Spring 2006 Presentation to OPAC Operational Committee 01/25/06

  2. Review of Definitions • Scopes: Filters applied prior to a search to refine it. Available on the main search screen or on the advanced search screen. • Types of scopes: • Location • Augsburg College • Hamline University-Bush Library, etc. • Collection • Reference • Curriculum/Juvenile • Type of material • Films/Video • E-Resources • Journals • Music Scores/Sound Recordings

  3. Main Search Screen: Type of Material & Collection Scopes

  4. Main Search Screen: “Search by Collection”

  5. Advanced Search Screen: “Limit by Collection or Institution”

  6. Definitions, cont. • Limits: Filters applied after a search to further refine it. Available on the “advanced search” screen or via the “limit/sort search” button. Current “Material type” limits

  7. Advanced Search Screen: Material Type

  8. Limit/Sort Screen: Material Type

  9. Specific Format “Filter”

  10. Goals • Make OPAC search results more accurate, complete, consistent • Ensure that results of searches scoped pre-search by a specific type of material contain the same results as searches limited post-search by the same type of material • Provide more consistent and flexible options for post-search and advanced search limiting by type of material • Simplify the background coding of the scopes to streamline maintenance and reduce errors

  11. Solutions • Generate both pre-search type of material scopes and post-search type of material limits from the “mat type” code in the bib record • Searches scoped by a particular type of material will yield essentially the same hits as searches limited by the same type of material. • Scoping tables will be less complex and easier to maintain; errors in coding that affect scopes can easily be corrected by catalogers rather than III. • Redefine bcode 1 to improve scoping of certain multi-format items

  12. Solutions, cont. • Make revisions to the labels and content of the type of material scopes • Revise some of the current “mat type” codes so they are more consistent and logical • Add new post-search specific format filters for audio, video, and microform materials • Allows for more refined searches

  13. Revised Scope Labels and Definitions

  14. Revised mat type codes

  15. New specific format filters • Add new post-search specific format filters for audio, video, and microform resources • Analogous to existing post-search Electronic Format filter • Can be used by themselves or in conjunction with “Material Type” search on the same screen to fine-tune searches • Recommend adding all four filters to advanced search screen for greater consistency with post-search limit screen

  16. New specific format filters, cont. • All four specific format filters will be driven from MARC 007 field

  17. Role of OPAC Operational Committee • Design of Advanced Search screen and limit/sort screen • Includes new specific format filters and revision of MATERIAL type pull-down menus • Make content and layout of both screens as similar as possible • Consult with former OPAC redesign task force • Revision of scope labels on main search screens (2 places) • Public messages during implementation • Scopes may be temporarily unavailable • Information/training for public services staff
