  1. Types of Wood --A Webquest--

  2. Problem • As a cabinet maker, you are planning a kitchen project for a client. You and the client have decided the design for the project, which entails a lot of detailed craftsmanship and fine finishing including staining. • The client has asked for samples and characteristics of lumber for the project. You must put together a list of possible LIGHT WOODS use • Also include the one type that you recommend for the project. • This list should be professional and informative so that the client can chose the best type.

  3. Hardwoods and Softwoods • Hardwood" is a term applied to trees that lose their leaves in winter. • "Softwood" describes evergreens such as fir, pine and redwood. • It does not have to do with the strength or hardness of the wood. • The actual durability a wood is described in a range from very soft to very hard.

  4. Solution • To solve this problem, you must research the different types of wood that can be used. • Create a professional-looking document with all the possible types of lumber that can be used. • Since you will not be able to gather the samples in the amount of time needed, you should put together picture samples.

  5. Guidelines • Since there are so many different types of wood, your project will be quite extensive. You should get information to fill about 5 pages if you have everything needed. • Pictures are helpful and necessary, but the pictures should not take up more than about 1” by 2” per picture. • This 40 point assignment is due on Wednesday, Jan. 17. You will have today to work on it in class and possibly part of another day before that time. • When you are finished, you may e-mail the document to me at – josh.christiansen@k12.sd.us --

  6. Helpful Websites • To get you started, I have made a list of SOME of the possible types of wood on the next slide. • Also, listed are some websites that will help you along the way. • http://www.woodguild.com/gallery/woodworkers/types/woodt.html • http://www.woodworking.org/WC/woodsampler.html • http://www.hobbithouseinc.com/personal/woodpics/padauk.htm • http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/pac_ctnt_banner_wide/text/0,1783,HGTV_17196_19632,00.html
