  2. What is Tumblr?... • Mircro-blogging platform and social networking website that is now owned by Yahoo! Inc. • The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog.

History of Tumblr… • Founder/CEO: David Karp • Development began in 2006 • Launched in February 2007—in two weeks the site gained over 75,000 users. • June 2012, Tumblr featured its first major brand advertising campaign with Adidas. • May 20, 2013, it was announced that Yahoo! And Tumblr reached an agreement for Yahoo! To buy for 1.1 billion.

  4. Features of tumblr… • Dashboard - The dashboard is the primary tool for the typical Tumblr user. It is a live feed of recent posts from blogs that they follow. Through the dashboard, users are able to comment, reblog, and like posts from other blogs that appear on their dashboard. The dashboard allows the user to upload text posts, images, video, quotes, or links to their blog with a click of a button displayed at the top of the dashboard. Users are also able to connect their blogs to their Twitter and Facebook accounts, so whenever they make a post, it will also be sent as a tweet and a status update. • Queue- Users are able to set up a schedule to delay posts that they make. They can spread their posts over several hours or even days. • Tags- For each post a user creates, they are able to help their audience find posts about certain topics by adding tags. If someone were to upload a picture to their blog and wanted their viewers to find pictures, they would add the tag picture, and their viewers could use that word to search up posts with the tag #picture. • HTML editing - Tumblr allows users to edit their blog's theme HTML coding to control the appearance of their blog. Users are also able to use a custom domain name for their blog.

  6. Setting up an account… • Visit Tumblr’s website, you should be directed to Tumblr’s main page. Click “sign up” which is located on the far right. • Enter your email address. Choose a password, then select “unique URL” • You’ll need to pick an avatar, a title. And a theme for your blog. • Start posting!!!!!!

  7. Standard Layouts v. Custom Layouts • Tumblr has many preloaded themes that you can use for your blog and your linked pages. • Custom layouts allow users to use HTML code to completely customize the look of their blog. • With the custom layout you can make your blog truly unique by customizing font, text placement, background, and more. • This will set your blog apart and give you an edge in the blogging world.

Following • Following on Tumblr is like subscribing to someone’s blog. • When you follow someone their blog shows up in your daily feed • Following is where the social networking aspect of the site comes in • Gaining followers on Tumblr requires one to be an active member of the site. • Centering your blog on a theme, and posting original interesting content will help you gain followers on the site

  9. Tags • Tagging allows you to assign key words to your post. • Tags make searching for posts on your own blog easier and it also makes it easier for people who aren’t following you find your posts. • When tagging, users need to pick general keywords so that their blogs are easier to find.

Redirect Pages • With redirect pages you can link followers to different pages. • Redirect Pages can lead to a page with your content that has a certain tag, and they can also be used to redirect users to you different social media accounts or other blogging platforms • Adding redirect pages is a fairly simple to create. It just requires you to tweak your blogs layout using the customize page.

  11. Google Analytics • Google analytics monitors visits to your sites. • By using it you can find out how many people visited your site and how often. • You can also use Google Analytics to see what search terms brought visitors to your page.

  12. Messages • There are three main types of messages on Tumblr: Fan Mail, Asks and Submissions  • Fan Mail allows users to privately message you. You can leave “fan mail” on any blog you’ve been following for at least 48 hours. • Asks are messages that followers anonymous users can send you with questions. You can publish these to your blog, or leave them private. • Submissions allow other Tumblr users to submit posts to be published to your blog. This feature is optional, but great for user generated and communal blogs.

  13. Connecting Tumblr to Other Social Media • Redirect Pages are excellent for connecting Tumblr to your other social media accounts. • When posting on Tumblr, you are able to simultaneously post both to Twitter and Facebook. • Instagram also gives you an option to post on Tumblr when using their app.

Tumblr and News • News organizations like NBC Nightly News and ABC World News often use tumblr for link aggregation, which are posts full of links to interesting content on thenews organization’s website and around the web. • News organizations also utilize Tumblr in order to post content that will not fit into their publication or would not work on their main website.

  15. Terms of Use • Tumblr has a humorous approach to its terms of use and paraphrases each paragraph so that it is easy to understand for every user • Unlike other social media platforms, Tumblr does not own the content you post.
