  2. GA Public Education System • Department of Education 187 public school system • Technical College System of GA 33 technical colleges with four university system technical divisions and 31 satellite campuses • University System of Georgia 35 public colleges and universities

  4. Curriculum in GA • As required by the Quality Basic Education Act of 1985, Georgia must maintain a curriculum that specifies what students are expected to know in each subject and grade

  5. State Curriculum • State’s curriculum is a guideline for instruction that helps teachers, students, and parents know what topics must be covered and mastered for a particular course. • Curriculum establishes the minimum standards, and does not prohibit systems, schools, or teachers from adding material to it. • Some systems may have curricula of their own, but they must include everything that the state requires.

  6. Georgia Performance Standards • Georgia Performance Standards are the result of months of work by teacher teams, state and national experts, and consultants

Is a school system required to follow the state curriculum? • At a minimum, the material in the state curriculum must be covered, but school systems are free to supplement it with additional topics they expect teachers to cover • The state curriculum is the minimum of what teachers should teach and what students should know

  8. CTAE Construction-Related Equipment Grant • Grant funding has been provided for several years in Georgia to complement CTAE program improvements. • Purpose is to provide funding for large essential equipment for CTAE programs: (1) in new school buildings; (2) in newly-remodeled labs; (3) where new programs are being implemented. http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/ci_cta.aspx?PageReq=CICTAEquipment

  11. Career Pathway Is a coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses, usually beginning in the 9th grade and leading to a diploma, associate degree, baccalaureate degree and beyond.

  12. Dual Enrollment Educational opportunity that allows secondary students to earn dual credit from both GaDOE schools and the TCSG technical colleges while the student is still in high school.

GA Career Academy Network Career Academies in Georgia are schools that serve high school students and have the following basic components: Students are prepared for college and career Small learning community environments provide supportive atmospheres Curriculum is sequenced and integrates academics and career-based learning Dual credit courses give students the opportunity to earn high school and college credits Each academy links high school to business, civic community, and higher education Each academy measures and shows impact on student performance and achievement Career themes reflect local economy

Work Based Learning Youth Apprenticeship Structured combination of school-based and work-based learning coordinated with business, industry and labor that facilitates transition to the workforce by providing the apprentice the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, postsecondary credential/diploma and certificate of occupational skills for jobs in highly technical fields. Internships Structured placement, either short-term or long-term, that enables students to connect career interests to academic and occupational learning in cooperation with business and industry in a paid or non-paid position. Job Shadowing Method of exposing students to work and careers by structuring visits to various work sites in which they spend time with and observe the jobs of individual workers. Provides students a look at the world of work and the range of career opportunities available to them and helps to stimulate career exploration.

  16. Georgia Centers of Innovation • Created in 2003, the program provides unique, technology-oriented support to existing businesses and entrepreneurs in the areas of aerospace, agribusiness, energy, life sciences, logistics and advanced manufacturing.
