  3. ET- write these notes down • Variable- a letter that is used to represent one or more numbers. • Value of a variable- the numbers represented by the variable • Variable Expression- A collection of numbers, variables and operations. • Evaluating the Expression- replacing each variable by a number and doing the math • Power Expression- an expression that has a power in it. For example 46 • Exponent- the number of times the base is used as a factor, or multiplied. • Base- the bottom number in a power, the number that is being multiplied. When you are done work on any assignments you have not completed.

  4. Vocabulary • Unit Analysis- figuring out the units for each variable in a problem. When the same units occur in the numerator and the denominator then you can cancel the units. • Verbal Model- represent the math problem in words instead of math symbols. • Important equations • Average speed = distance time • Simple interest = Principle(interest rate)(time)

  23. 1.3 vocabulary • Order of Operations- the order in which mathematicians have established that we do math. • Left to right rule- operations that have the same priority, such as multiplication and division or addition and subtraction are preformed from left to right.

  24. Vocabulary section 1.4 • Equation- two expressions with an equal sign between them • Open sentence- An equation with one or more variables. • Solution of an equation- a number that replaces the variable in an equation with one variable and makes it true. • Inequality- two expressions with an inequality symbol between them. • Solution to an inequality - a number that produces a true statement when it is substituted for the variable in the inequality.

Vocabulary • Function- a relation where for each input there is exactly one output Input-output table- lists the inputs and outputs in table form Domain- the collection of all input values Range- the collection of all output values Independent Variable- The input of the function, in an experiment the independent variable is not being changed. Dependant Variable- the output of a function, in an experiment the dependant variable is being changed by the independent variable.
