  1. Unit Rate Rivalry

How to Play • Pair up with someone in the group to play against. • For each of the 6 questions, find the unit rate. • Show your processes in words and in numbers on your recording sheets. • Check with your opponent and compare answers. If your answer is correct and you agree, you each score 10 points. If you do not agree, check with the answer key (on the next slide) and the person who had the correct answer scores 10 points, while the other scores 5 points. • Continue this process for all 6 problems, and the Bonus Problem. The Bonus problem is worth 20 points. Whoever gets it correct first, gets the 20 points.

  4. 1) A 12 pack of Big Red costs $3.00, how much for one Big Red?

  5. 12 packs cost $3.00 so 1 pack costs X dollars. = x = .25 1 pack of Big Red is $0.25

  6. 2) Joshua can run 15 miles in 2 hours, how many miles can he run in one hour?

  7. Joshua can run 15 miles in 2 hours, therefore he can run X miles in 1 hour. = x = 7.5 He can run 7.5 miles in 1 hour.

  8. 3) Jeff’s VW bug will go 390 miles on 15 gallons of gas, about how many miles will his VW bug go on one gallon of gas?

  9. Jeff’s bug can go 380 miles on 15 gallons of gas, therefore it can go about X miles on 1 gallon of gas. = x = 26 Jeff’s car can go 26 miles on ONE gallon of gas.

  10. Round 2

  11. 4) Joseph bought a dozen roses for $4.80 for his girlfriend, how much did he pay for each rose?

  12. Joseph bought a dozen roses for $4.80 therefore, he paid X dollars for 1 rose. = x = .40 He paid .40 for each rose.

  13. 5) It took Manny 30 minutes to row his boat across a lake. The lake was 750 yards across. What was Manny’s average rowing speed?

  14. It took Manny 30 minutes to row 750 yards, therefore he could row x yards in 1 minute. = x = 25 Manny can row 25 yards in 1 minute.

  15. 6) A train can travel 650 miles in two and a half hours, how far can it travel in one hour?

  16. A train that can travel 650 miles in 2.5 hours, can travel x miles in 1 hour. = x = 260 The train can travel 260 miles in 1 hour.

  17. Bonus Round

  18. Which is a better buy?(Which unit rate is CHEAPER?) • A pack of Orbit chewing gum that costs $1.50 for 25 sticks? Or • A pack of Orbit chewig gum that costs $1.20 for 12 sticks?
