  4. Stratford-Upon-Avon • Baptized on April 26, 1564 • Born on April 23, 1564 (usually waited 3 days, so birthday is an estimate) • John Shakespeare the Glover (dad) • Mary Shakespeare from the Arden family (mom) • 6 siblings = 2 sisters died before age one; 3 brothers; 1 sister who lived to 75

  5. Matrimony at 18 • Anne Hathaway – 26 years old • Susanna – believed to be his favorite • Twins—Hamnet and Judith • Hamnet died at age 11 • Reason for death is unknown

  6. Leaving Stratford • Some time in the 1580s Shakespeare leaves his home • Poaching • Holding horses for gentlemen at play houses • Unknown—but had to be for a serious reason • Joins the Queen’s Men

  7. Arriving in London • Rat-infested, over –crowded, polluted, prone to fire and on occasion riot • Bubonic plague ravaged the city over and over • Wide spread panic, wiping out entire families, decimating neighborhoods

  8. Becoming a World Famous Playwright • Acted, wrote plays, owned property • No University education like other playwrights • 884,647 words and 118,406 lines • 38 play perhaps 39 • 147 sonnets • 2 narrative poems

  9. In the End • Returned to Stratford in 1613 • Died in 1616 • Died wealthy unlike other “artistic” people of the time • Willed most things to Susanna • His wife was not originally in the will • Just weeks prior to his death he added his wife • Second-best bed (what he willed his wife)

The Rumor Mill • Personal life of Shakespeare is unknown • No personal belongings—books, notes, original manuscripts—were preserved • He did not keep personal notes for fear of persecution or no one thought to preserve them • Gay? • Woman? • Did he really exist? • Did he really write the plays?

Why does he/she feel this way?

  14. Homework Ask an adult to answer each question from class. Then ask these. Record their answers. • Tell me about your high school sweetheart(s). What happened? What would your life be like if you married that person? What is one piece of advice you would give teens who think they’re in love? Record surprising information. Warning: You may share some of this with the class! • Did you have to read Romeo and Juliet in high school? What did you think of it?
