  2. History History • Formerly known as the “Red River Shootout.” • Result of the “Red River dispute” between the governors of Oklahoma and Texas. • Rivalry name was changed to the “Red River Rivalry” in 2005.

  3. History History • Games began in the early 1900s (before Oklahoma was even declared a state). • Games are played at the Cotton Bowl, in Dallas, during the Texas State Fair.

  4. Interesting Facts • Three trophies are awarded to the winning team: • The Golden Hat • The Governor’s Trophy • The Red River Rivalry Trophy

  5. January 2000 October 2000 • Stands out as the most memorable game to Red River Rivalry fans. • Due, in part, to Oklahoma’s quarterback at the time, Quentin Griffin. • During the game Griffin broke a NCAA record with six touchdowns.

  6. January 2000 October 2000 • However, Oklahoma held the Longhorns with seven rushing yards, winning the game 63-14. • After the win against the Longhorns, the Sooners finished the season undefeated and went on to win their first Nation Championship.

  7. February 2005 October 2005 • During this game the number two ranked Longhorns Broke their five year cold streak against the Sooners. • This was the rivalry’s 100th game, and Longhorn coach, Mark Brown, was leading the Longhorns to a National Championship title.

  8. February 2005 October 2005 • During the game Longhorn freshman, Jamaal Charles, ran an 80-yard touchdown, and this led to Texas winning 45-12. • This win ultimately led Texas to finish the season undefeated, as well as gaining a National Championship by beating USC in the Rose Bowl.
