Objectives • Define and give examples of endangered and threatened species • Describe several ways that species are being threatened with extinction globally • Explain which types of threats are having the largest impact on biodiversity • List areas of the world that have high levels of biodiversity and many threats to species • Compare the amount of biodiversity in the US to that of the rest of the world

  3. Species Prone to Extinction • Rate of extinction is estimated to have increased by a multiple of 50 since 1800 • Humans are primary cause of the extinctions

  4. Species Prone to Extinction • Species with small populations in limited areas can easily become extinct • Those that migrate, need large or special habitats, those exploited by humans

  5. Species Prone to Extinction • Endangered species: species that is likely to become extinct if protective measures are not taken immediately • Threatened species: species that has declining population and likely to become endangered if it is not protected

  6. How Do Humans Cause Extinction • Human population growth has accelerated and so has the rate of extinction • Major causes of extinction are destruction of habitats, introduction of nonnative species, pollution, and overharvesting of species

  7. How Do Humans Cause Extinction • Habitat Destruction and Fragmentation • As human population grows, use more land to build homes and harvest resources

  8. How Do Humans Cause Extinction • Invasive Exotic Species • Exotic species: species that is not native to a particular region • Exotic species can threaten native species that have no natural defenses against them

  9. How Do Humans Cause Extinction • Harvesting, Hunting, Poaching • Excessive harvesting and hunting of species can lead to extinction • Poaching: illegal hunting, harvesting, and trade of wildlife

  10. How Do Humans Cause Extinction • Pollution • Pesticides, cleaning agents, drugs, and other chemicals used by humans are making their way into food webs around the globe

  11. Areas of Critical Biodiversity • Endemic species: species that are native to and found only within a limited area • Large amounts = biodiversity
