Judgment is Coming • A Day of Judgment is coming for all the earth. • God will judge the earth, not to fulfill some external law, but to fulfill His own righteous character.  • Every person will have an opportunity to make a defense before the Judge of the Universe, and every person will know the reason for his sentence. • There will be a judgment both of the righteous and the unrighteous.

  3. I. The Certainty of Judgment (From H.C. Thiessen, Lectures in Systematic Theology, pp. 496-505) • Solomon says in Ecclesiastes 11:9, LITV, “Rejoice, O young man, in your youth. And make your heart glad in the days of your youth, and walk in the ways of your heart, and in the sight of your eyes; but know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment.” • Ecclesiastes 12:14, KJVA, “For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.”

The Certainty of Judgment • Paul says in Romans 2:14-16, KJVA, 14, “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:” [This natural law, not revealed law.] • 15, “Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)” • [Your conscience reminds you of God’s judgment or your mind makes excuses for sin.] • 16, “In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.”

  5. I. The Certainty of Judgment • God will not only judge the secret acts of men but their secret thoughts and desires. Some counselors may tell you that no feelings or emotions are wrong, but God will judge the misplaced affections of the heart. • Proverbs 4:23, KJVA, “Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.” • The knowledge of a coming judgment makes most of society responsible to one another. • James Strong says, “A certain great statesman said that what he dreaded most for his country was not the Day of Judgment, but the day of no judgment.”

  6. I. The Certainty of Judgment • When Abraham prayed for Sodom and Gomorrah he recognized God as the Judge of all the earth. Genesis 18:25, KJVA, “That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?” • Hannah recognized that God will judge the earth. 1 Samuel 2:10, KJVA, “The adversaries of the LORD shall be broken to pieces; out of heaven shall he thunder upon them: the LORD shall judge the ends of the earth; and he shall give strength unto his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.” • David said in Psalms 9:7-8, “But the LORD shall endure for ever: he hath prepared his throne for judgment. And he shall judge the world in righteousness, he shall minister judgment to the people in uprightness.”

  7. I. The Certainty of Judgment • Isaiah said, “And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people..,” Isaiah 2:4, KJV. • In Joel 3:12, ASV, God says, “Let the nations bestir themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there will I sit to judge all the nations round about.”

The Certainty of Judgment In the New Testament: • Jesus forewarned of judgment. • Matthew 16:27, KJVA, “For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward every man according to his works.” • Paul forewarned of judgment. • Acts 17:31, KJVA, “Because he hath appointed a day, in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that man whom he hath ordained; whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead.” • 2 Corinthians 5:10, KJVA, “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

The Certainty of Judgment In the New Testament: • The Revelation of Jesus forewarns of judgment. • Revelation 20:12, KJVA, “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.”

The Purposes For Judgment • The object of the judgment is not to determine your character but to reveal it. • God already knows our character completely, Hebrews 4:13. • The purpose of the Judgment is to reveal our character and to assign the outward conditions that our character demands. • Memory, conscience, and character are evidences, reminders, and preparation, for this Final Judgment to come.

The Purposes For Judgment • Memory, conscience, and character are evidences, reminders, and preparation, for this Final Judgment to come.  • Memory, Luke 16:25, KJVA, “But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.” • Conscience, Romans 2:15, KJVA, “Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)”

The Purposes For Judgment • Character, Ephesians 4:17-19, KJVA • 17, “This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind,” • 18, “Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart:” • 19, “Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.” • Unrighteous Character is: Vanity of Mind, Understanding Darkened, Alienation from God, Blindness of Heart, Past Feeling, Lasciviousness, Uncleanness, and Greediness. • The Judgments will fulfill God’s justice to all creation. • The Judgments will reveal God’s righteousness to all creation.

  13. The Judge • “God is the judge of all (Hebrews, 12:23 KJVA, “To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,”), but He will perform this work through Jesus Christ.” • John 5:22-23, KJVA, “For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father. He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father which hath sent him.” • Jesus shall judge the living and the dead. • 2 Timothy 4:1, KJVA, “I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;”

The Judge • Jesus’ humiliation qualifies Him to be our Judge. • Philippians 2:8-11, KJVA, “And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9, Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10, That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11, And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

  15. The Judge • Revelation 5:1-6, KJVA, “And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. 2, And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? 3, And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. 4, And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. 5, And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. 6, And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.”

  16. The Judgments • One judgment is already past. In Christ our sins were judged once and for all. • 2 Corinthians 5:21, KJVA, “For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” • Galatians 3:13, KJVA, “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree:” • 1 Peter 2:24, KJVA, “Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.”

  17. The Judgments • No repentant believer will ever be condemned for his sins since he has been judged for them already in the person of Jesus the Christ. • John 5:25, KJVA, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God: and they that hear shall live.” • However, there is a present judgment for believers. • By the conviction of the Holy Spirit we must judge sin in our own lives and repent. • 1 Corinthians 11:31, KJVA 31, “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.”

  18. The Judgments This Present Judgment • By the Word of God we must judge sin in the Body of Christ. • 1 Corinthians 5:3-5, KJVA 3, “For I verily, as absent in body, but present in spirit, have judged already, as though I were present, concerning him that hath so done this deed, 4, In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, 5, To deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus.”

  19. The Judgments • The Lord chastens His disobedient children so they will judge themselves and put sin out of their lives. • Hebrews 12:11, KJVA, “Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby.” • Revelation 3:19, KJVA, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.”

  20. The Judgments • There are seven judgments yet to come. • 1. The Judgment of the Believers. • Believers will be rewarded for their works. • Romans 14:10, Geneva, “But why doest thou condemne thy brother? Or why doest thou despise thy brother? for we shal all appeare before the iudgementseate of Christ.” • 1 Corinthians 3:13-15, KJVA”Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. 14, If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. 15, If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.” • 2 Corinthians 5:10, KJVA “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad.”

  21. The Rewards of Crowns (From Jeff Ellis) • All Crowns are Incorruptible • 1 Corinthians 9:25, “And every man that strives for the mastery is temperate in all things. Now they do it to obtain a corruptible crown; but we an incorruptible crown.” • 1 Peter 1:4, “to an inheritance that cannot decay, spoil or fade, kept safe for you in heaven.”

  22. The Crown of Life • James 1:12, “Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” • Revelations 2:10-11, “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

  23. The Crown of Glory • 1 Peter 5:4, “and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.” • Proverbs 4:8-9, “Exalt her [Wisdom], and she will promote you; She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She will place on your head an ornament of grace; A crown of glory she will deliver to you."

  24. The Crown of Rejoicing • 1 Thessalonians 2:19, “For what is our hope, or joy, or crown of rejoicing? Are not even ye in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at his coming?”

  25. The Crown of Righteousness • II Timothy 4:6-8, “As for me, I am already being poured out on the altar; yes, the time for my departure has arrived. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 All that awaits me now is the crown of righteousness which the Lord, "the Righteous Judge," will award to me on that Day - and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for him to appear.”

  26. The Seven Judgments • 1. The Judgment of the Believers. • 2. The Judgment of Israel. • 3. The Judgment of Babylon • 4. The Judgment of the Beast, the False Prophet, and Their Armies • 5. The Judgment of the Nations • 6. The Judgment of Satan and His Angels • 7. The Judgment of the Unsaved Dead

  27. The Seven Judgments • The first three judgments involve metaphors of women: • The Church, the Bride of Christ, • Israel, the Wife of God, and • The Apostate Church , the Great Prostitute.

  28. The Judgment of Israel • The Time of Jacob’s Trouble • The following Scriptures that speak of this time of unparalleled trouble in history are in red. All the Scriptures that speak of deliverance are in blue. • Jeremiah 30:4-7, “ And these are the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah. 5, For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace. 6, Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness? 7, Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble; but he shall be saved out of it.” (See the rest of the chapter for the future of Israel.)

  29. The Judgment of Israel • Daniel 12:1, “And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.”

  30. Jacob’s Trouble • Matthew 24:15-22, “When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place, (whoso readeth, let him understand:) 16, Then let them which be in Judaea flee into the mountains: 17, Let him which is on the housetop not come down to take any thing out of his house: 18, Neither let him which is in the field return back to take his clothes. 19, And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20, But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21, For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be. 22, And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.”

  31. Jacob’s Trouble • This time of Jacob’s Trouble comes in the middle of the 70th Week of Daniel. • Daniel 9:27, “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.”

  32. Jacob’s Trouble • The Beast is given power for 42 months or 3 ½ years. • Revelation 13:5, “And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty and two months.” • Daniel 12:11, “And from the time that the daily sacrifice shall be taken away, and the abomination that maketh desolate set up, there shall be a thousand two hundred and ninety days.”

  33. Jacob’s Trouble • The Beast (antichrist) shall make war against the saints (Revelation 13:7) and against Israel. Two-thirds of Israel shall die. • Zechariah 13:8-9, “And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. 9, And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

  34. Jacob’s Trouble • The Lord will seal 144,000 Jews (Revelation 7) so they will not be killed by the judgment of God. These are the remnant of Israel. • They will be swept into hiding for 3 ½ years to be hidden from judgment. • Revelation 12:14, “And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent.” • Micah 2:12, “I will surely assemble, O Jacob, all of thee; I will surely gather the remnant of Israel; I will put them together as the sheep of Bozrah [Scholars believe this is Petra.], as the flock in the midst of their fold: they shall make great noise by reason of the multitude of men.”

  35. Jacob’s Trouble • This shall be a time of purging and purifying of the nation of Israel. • Ezekiel 20:33-38, “As I live, saith the Lord GOD, surely with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out, will I rule over you: 34, And I will bring you out from the people, and will gather you out of the countries wherein ye are scattered, with a mighty hand, and with a stretched out arm, and with fury poured out. 35, And I will bring you into the wilderness of the people, and there will I plead with you face to face. 36, Like as I pleaded with your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, so will I plead with you, saith the Lord GOD. 37, And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant: 38, And I will purge out from among you the rebels, and them that transgress against me: I will bring them forth out of the country where they sojourn, and they shall not enter into the land of Israel: and ye shall know that I am the LORD.”

  36. Jacob’s Trouble • Malachi 3:2-5, “But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: 3, And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness. 4, Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the LORD, as in the days of old, and as in former years. 5, And I will come near to you to judgment; and I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, and against the adulterers, and against false swearers, and against those that oppress the hireling in his wages, the widow, and the fatherless, and that turn aside the stranger from his right, and fear not me, saith the LORD of hosts.”

  37. Jacob’s Trouble • When the antichrist tries to destroy Israel at Bozra, Jesus will return and deliver the remnant at Bozra. • Isaiah 63:1-6, “Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save. 2, Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat? 3, I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment. 4, For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come. 5, And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me. 6, And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.”

  38. Jacob’s Trouble • Revelation 19:11-16, “And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12, His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13, And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14, And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15, And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16, And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

  39. Jacob’s Trouble • Israel will acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah that they longed for. • Zechariah 12:10, “And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.” • After the Battle of Armageddon Jesus will rule the earth from Jerusalem.
