  1. Devin Van Komen E85 Ethanol Fuel

  2. E85 Ethanol- Biofuel • Why Ethanol? • Ethanol used as a racing fuel. • Usedwidelytoday. • Sawit on the news. • You canmakeitat home.

  3. What Is E85 Ethanol? • Ethanol isbasicaly pure alcohol. • E85 Ethanol is a bio-fuel made fromfermented grains thatistreatedwithchemicals, filtered, then mixed 85% Ethanol, 15% traditionalgasoline.

  4. WhatisE85 Ethanolused for • Currently, E85 ethanolisused as an alternative to gasoline in many cars. • Cars labeledwith the Flex-Fuel badge are made to be able to drive on gasoline or E85 Ethanol.

  5. The ManufacturingProcess

  6. Obtain a license. • A specialalcohollicenseisrequired to makeany type of alcohol. A license to makeethanolisusually free as long as you are producinglessthan 10,000 gallons a year. • To obtainthislicensevisithttp://abc.utah.gov/

  7. Calculate how much to make. • How muchproductyou’llneedisdetermined by the size of your boiler. For a 100 gallon boiler, you will need 350 lb. of pre milled grain, 40 gallons of water, 91 grams of alpha amylase. This will give you 18.5 gallons of ethanol and 21.8 gallons of E85.

  8. The Grain. • Any type of grain maybeused to makeethynol, but youwill have to getyour grain milledinto a fine powderusingeither a garinmill or a hammermill. • Corn, wheat, and surgar are the mostcommonlyused grains.

  9. The Mixture isstarted. • The milled grain isthen mixed withwater and alpha amylase and boiled for 20-30 min. • Nextglucoamylaseisaddedbefore the mixture iscooled. • Yeastisadded and the mixture isfermented.

  10. Distillation • The Mixture isthendistilledat 175 degrees fahrenheit. • The restisthendiscarded.

  11. Filtering • The Distilledethanolisthenfilteredthrough an activatedcarbonfilter to capture anyvolatile organic compounds.

  12. Drying the Ethanol. • The filtered mixture isthendryed by mixingitwithzeolite . • Zeoliteis an aluminum-silica substance thatabsorbscarbondioxide and water. • Let the ethanol/zeolite mixture sit over night in a metalcan. • Filterdehydratedethanolintoanother container using a simple screen.

  13. Final steps • Thefinal step to make E85 Ethanol is to add gasoline. • To figure out how much gas to add, just multiply the amount of ethanol you just made by .15. • Use a hydrometer to make sure your E85 is 200 proof.

  14. Overview

  15. Legal implications • The onlylegalimpilacations to thisprocessisthatyou must obtain the properlicense.

  16. Social Implications • Subsidized by government. • Cheaper in the end. $1.89-$2.69 • Less horse power. • Cleanerburing fuel. • Less MPG
