Ch. 8 Exemplification and Ch. 12 Classification/ Division - Overview • Exemplification = “uses one or more particular cases, or examples, to illustrate or explain a general point or an abstract concept” (211). • Use examples to • Explain and clarify (212) • Add interest (212-213) • Persuade (213) • Test your thesis (213-214) • Enough and Fair Range of Examples (214-215) • Use Order of Importance: • “[A]rrange examples [from one body paragraph to the next] in order of importance” (216). • “Within each paragraph, you can arrange examples chronologically” (215). • Two ways to do Exemplification: • Classification: at least three groups of examples (215) or • Division: at least three parts of one extended example (215-216)
