  1. General Reading Processes Lesson 3 Reading Objective: Students will understand the importance of the two steps applied in the during reading stage of the reading process: read with a purpose and connect. Writing Objective:Students will complete a first draft of an explanation essay during the writing stage of the writing process.

  2. ` Before and During Reading Review Ketchup – Catch-Up Count off by 2. 1’s are going to be the Mustard and 2’s are the Ketchup. The Mustard needs to Catch-Up the Ketchup on what is included in the Before and During Reading stages of the Reading Process. Ketchup needs to record their information on the sheet provided.

  3. Writing Process Review Prewriting involves 2 main steps. What are they? What 2 traits did we work on yesterday? How are those traits related to the prewriting stage of the writing process?

  4. The Writing Stage Our traits focus for today are organization, word choice, sentence fluency, and voice. Organization means to make your essay easy to follow from beginning to end. Word Choice means the specific nouns, verbs, and adjectives used in your writing. Remember to add vivid verbs and colorful nouns.

  5. The Writing Stage Contin. Sentence Fluency refers to your sentences flowing smoothly and clearly. Voice is the way you let the reader know you really care about the topic. Let’s now look at an example from Max’s essay when he writes his first draft.

  6. Max's Expository Essay Read Max’s Essay along with your teacher. After reading, answer the following question based upon our lesson and your knowledge of the writing process and the 6 traits of writing. Answer the question in your Assessment Journal. Be sure to write your name and lesson 3 at the top of the page. 1. Does Max meet the goals for ideas, organization, and voice based on his essay?

  7. During Reading Stage Why is it important to read with a purpose? Why is it important to connect with your reading? Take a look at your Electricity text again on pages 4-9. What was our purpose for reading these pages? How would you think we would go about reading with that purpose?

  8. Assessment Question Today we talked about the writing stage of the writing process and the during reading stage of the reading process. Based on our class discussions, notes, and your prior knowledge answer the following question in your assessment journal. 1. How does reading with a purpose and making connections make you a better reader?
