  2. Proposed Discussion Outline for TG3a PHY Q&A Session John Barr, Gregg Rasor, Jim Allen John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  3. Q&A Outline • Address key criteria in sequence: • Range, multiple piconet support, complexity, power, etc. • Establish terminology for comparison for each topic. • Open up to random questions after key criteria covered. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  4. Consistent Comparison Information • It would help voters to easily see how proposals compare • Based on Criteria document (03/031r9) • Range, Implementation complexity, Multiple Piconet Support, Regulatory Approval, Etc. • Propose a subcommittee to prepare a comparison matrix for presentation at the beginning of the July meeting. • Process is to use conference calls or set up an ad hoc for presenters to contribute to the summary matrix. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  5. Common Issues • Patent Policy • Regulatory Approval • Use of IEEE 802.15.3 MAC John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  6. Patent Policy • All proposers agree to adhere to the IEEE Patent Policy: • The Patent Holder is prepared to grant a license to an unrestricted number of applicants on a worldwide, non-discriminatory basis and on reasonable terms and conditions to comply with the [Proposed] IEEE Standard. • The Patent Holder is prepared to grant a free license to an unrestricted number of applicants on a worldwide, non-discriminatory basis to comply with the [Proposed] IEEE Standard. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  7. Regulatory Approval • All proposals adhere to the current FCC rules regarding operation of UWB systems between 3.1 and 10.6 GHz. • Most proposals also have provisions for modifying their spectrum usage to account for worldwide regulatory rules still being developed in Europe and Asia. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  8. Use of the 802.15.3 MAC • All proposals assume that the 802.15.3 MAC will be used. • Some proposals required no changes • Some proposals require specific PHY support modifications • Additional MAC changes not required to support a particular PHY should be addressed as a separate 802.15.3 addendum. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  9. PHY Comparison Topics - 1 • Unit Manufacturing Cost/Complexity • Signal Robustness • Interference and Susceptibility, Coexistence • Technical Feasibility • Manufacturability, Time to Market, Regulatory Impact • Scalability • Location Awareness John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  10. PHY Comparison Topics - 2 • Required MAC Enhancements • Size and Form Factor • Payload bit rate and data throughput • Payload bit rate, packet overhead, PHY-SAP throughput • Simultaneously Operating Piconets • Signal Acquisition • System Performance • Link Budget John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  13. Signal Robustness • Maximum PER for specified packet length • Receiver Sensitivity in AWGN Environment • 110, 200 and (optional) 480 Mbps rates • Minimum required receiver sensitivity for PER of less than 8% of 1024 byte packets over free space distances of 10, 4 and presenter specified distance. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  16. Simultaneously Operating Piconets • PHY should operate in close proximity of multiple uncoordinated piconets, at specific bit and error rates. • What are the values of dint that cause the PER to degrade to a specific level. • Uncoordinated Interfering Transmitter Separation Distance • Values for CM1-5 and 110 and 200 Mbps John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  17. Payload bit rate and Data Throughput • Payload bit rate • Transmission rates for frames • Packet overhead • T_PA_INITIAL, T_PHYHDR, T_MIFS, T_PA_CONT • PHY-SAP throughput • Bit rate at which a series of 5 MPDUs are transferred from the MAC to the PHY (NO-ACK) • Single and multiple frame rates John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent

  19. Unit Manufacturing Cost/Complexity • Complexity estimates should be provided in terms of both analog and digital die size estimates, semiconductor processes, specified year for process technologies, gate count estimates, and major external components. • Similar considerations should be made with regard to MAC enhancements. • Reasonable and conservative values should be given. • Relative comparisons to existing technologies are acceptable. John Barr/Gregg Rasor, Motorola, Jim Allen, Appairent
