  1. The Soldier of the Lord03/119/2006Dr. Dane Boyles

  2. The Soldier of the Lord 1After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ aide:2“Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites. (Joshua 1:1-2)

  3. The Soldier of the Lord 3I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. 4Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Great Sea [a] on the west. (Joshua 1:3-4)

  4. The Soldier of the Lord 5No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. (Joshua 1:1-5)

  5. The Soldier of the Lord • The Duty of Courage and Strength • Joshua is commissioned for a test of faith. • First Word of Encouragement. ‘Be strong…’ (Joshua 1:6).

  6. The Soldier of the Lord 58 Therefore, my dear brothers, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. (1 Cor 15:58)

  7. The Soldier of the Lord 7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. (2 Ti 1:7) “... as I was with Moses, so I will be with you” (Joshua 1:5b)

  8. The Soldier of the Lord • Second Word of Encouragement 6 ‘[be] courageous…because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them. (Joshua 1:6) 14 Wait for the LORD; Be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. (Psa 27:14)

  9. The Soldier of the Lord 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD. (Psa 31:24) 6 each helps the otherand says to his brother, “Be strong!” (Isa 41:6)

  10. The Soldier of the Lord • The Duty of Obedience to the Word. 7 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go. (Joshua 1:7)

  11. The Soldier of the Lord 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)

  12. The Soldier of the Lord • God gave Joshua the recipe for success. • Joshua was prepared to command by first obeying. 29Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! (Acts 5:29) 14 You are my friends if you do what I command. (John 15:14)

  13. The Soldier of the Lord • Joshua was prepared to command byhis daily meditation. 8 Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. (Joshua 1:8)

  14. The Soldier of the Lord 1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. (Psa 1:1-2)

  15. The Soldier of the Lord 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. (Psa 1:1-3)

  16. The Soldier of the Lord • The command was to meditate, not just read. • By meditation we make it our very own.

  17. The Soldier of the Lord • Mere intellectual acquaintance to the Word of God is not enough; it must be applied to your life. • The best obedience comes from the best knowledge and best knowledge comes from meditation and meditation brings wisdom.

  18. The Soldier of the Lord • The Assurance of Victory. 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

  19. The Soldier of the Lord • Joshua was very conscious of his own inadequacy and his weakness. • Joshua was about to lead a nation that was not used to warfare into battle.

  20. The Soldier of the Lord • We can still count on the Lord to do everything He promised Joshua He would do! • He still gives victory over all our enemies: 4 …And this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith. 5 Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4b-5)

  21. The Soldier of the Lord • He is still ever-present and all powerful: • He is still faithful: 5 …because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Heb 3:5b) • He still keeps His promises 21being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (Rom 4:21)

  22. The Soldier of the Lord • He is still faithful: 5 …because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” (Heb 3:5b) • He still keeps His promises 21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised. (Rom 4:21)

  23. The Soldier of the Lord • He still gives absolute victory 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. (1Co 15:57)

  24. The Soldier of the Lord • CONCLUSION • What do we have to do to see these things come to pass in our lives? • Just one thing: Trust God!
