Contestant #2I have a drinking habit and a defiant tongue or attitude Contestant #3I am a former journalist who Wants to see my country as powerful as it once was.

  5. What is Fascism?? • Fascism is a form of totalitarian government based on the glorification of the state, staunch nationalism, and a strong, supreme ruler

  6. Characteristics of Totalitarianism • Government establishes complete control of all aspects of the state(political, military, economy, social, cultural) • Highly nationalistic (flags, salutes, rallies, uniforms) • Strict controls and laws • Military state (secret police, army, military) • Censorship (opposing literature and ideas) • Propaganda (media – radio, newspapers, posters) • One leader (dictator); charismatic • Total conformity of people to ideas and leader • Terror and Fear

  7. Background on Benito Mussolini • Came from middle-class, working family • Formerly a journalist with socialist beliefs • Fed up with conditions of Italy

  8. What conditions?? • Italy not given land promised from Treaty of London • Dissatisfaction after WWI • Economic Turmoil

  9. What did the people want?!?! • CHANGE!!!

  10. Mussolini offered “a little something to everyone” • Promised landowners protection of property • Promised employment and benefits to workers • Promised nationalists restoration Italy back to the days of the Roman Empire
