Menu and Toolbar Notes • File • Save as- to name the document and where to save • Save- saves the changes since the last time you save • My documents- is the computers hard drive • Log in ID- your h drive is accessible anywhere in the school district • Open- open folder on the toolbar • New- blank white page on the toolbar • Printer choice- 92p is black and white, 95p is the color • Page setup – margins, page layout • Print preview- what it will look like if you print

Menu and Toolbar Notes • Edit • Undo- your best friend to fix a mistake, backwards blue arrow on toolbar • Cut- scissors • Copy- double paper • Paste- clipboard • Highlighting/selecting- double click, triple click, drag and drop • Select all- fastest way to highlight everything • Find/replace-

Menu and Toolbar Notes • Format • Font style, color,- also on toolbar • Paragraph- double spacing • Bullets and numbering- on toolbar but more choice in the menu • Borders and shading- accents a document • Columns- choose how many and when to start • Backgrounds- does not print, for looks only • Show/hide align- on toolbar backwards looking P • Painter- paintbrush on toolbar, allows you to copy the format to another section • Zoom- changes how you see it but not how it prints

College Notes • General Education Requirements--these are the classes that you are required to take like English, math, speech, social science, science, foreign language • Full-time students need 12 credits to stay on parent’s health insurance. You usually need at least 15 credits a semester to graduate on time.

  14. College Notes • Most classes are 3 credits • Bachelors degree require around 124 credits • Dorms/on campus living with meal plans costs around $4,000-$7,000 • Scholarships and grants are money you don’t have to pay back • Loans need to be paid back with interest after you graduate

Want Ads Search • Succeeding- is as easy as being on time, ask questions, don’t complain, follow the rules, and do a good job • Getting Along- #1 reason people are fired • Be friendly, dependable, willing to learn, and develop relationships that will help you in the future • Quitting- leave on good terms because your next job will call them about you • Give two weeks notice (sometimes they don’t need it) • Resignation letter, short, polite, and dated

Getting Paid • Salary- You earn a set amount every week no matter how many hours you work (teachers, managers, ) • Hourly- you are paid by the hour (most jobs) • Piece Rate- you are paid based upon how much you produce (factory, assembly, some construction jobs) • Straight Commission- You are paid a percentage of how much you sell (many sales jobs) • Salary + commission- is a mixture of both

Getting Paid • Overtime- is 1 ½ times your hourly pay • hourly workers get it whenever you work more than 40 hours a week • Salaried workers do not get overtime • Union workers may get overtime whenever they work past their contract time • Double time- is twice your hourly pay • Some employers pay double time if you work holidays • Union workers may get it based on their contract stipulations

Taxes • Used for public good (like roads, welfare, police, fire, military, education, etc.) • Federal (10-33%) State (5%) County (6%) and City (fees and property taxes) • Social Security also called FICA tax • FICA is 7.65%-used to pay old people pensions- monthly check to live off of & medicare • Disability- monthly check to live off of if you can’t work • survivor benefits- monthly check until your 18 if you lose a parent

  23. Taxes • Sales Tax- the tax you pay when you buy something • Here in Polk county you pay 6% (5% goes to the State/county, 1% goes to the schools) • No sales tax on food in Iowa • Tax free weekend in August

Checkbook • Everyone needs a Checking account- they’re safe, makes bill paying easy, shows proof • Overdrawn or bounce a check- wrote a check for more than you have in the bank • Clearing house is the place where checks go to get separated to the correct banks • Forgery- signing a name on a check that is not yours • Reconciling at the end of the month you compare your checkbook with the bank statement

Studying Careers • Occupation/job- task or series of tasks that is performed to provide a good or service • Career- a goal in life that is fulfilled through a series of occupations • What is your first career goal right now? • CareerPlanning- process of studying careers, assessing your personal traits, & making decisions about a future career.

  30. Getting Insight Into Yourself • What are your needs & wants, does the career you want fit those • Mobility is the willingness & ability of a person to move to where the jobs are • lack of mobility leads to locational unemployment, people are unwilling to move to where the jobs are

Getting Insight Into Yourself • Your talents & abilities are important part of your career planning • Talent- natural inborn aptitude to do things • Ability-the quality of being able to do a certain task • What are you good at? What comes easy to you? What classes are you good at? • Abilities can be developed if you work at them!

  33. Making Career Decisions • The decision is up to you, but don’t wait to long, Why? • The more prepared you are, the better off you will be, Why? • Luck = opportunity + preparation • A tentative career decision- is subject to change as new information is received

Types of Industry • Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) researches and publishes info on jobs • The 2 major types of industry • Service industry performs a service (ex.?) • Goods industry manufactures things (ex.?) • White collar workers deal a lot with the public and handling information (ex.?) • Blue collar workers primarily involves use of machinery & equipment (ex.?) Blue collar are needing more training today. WHY?

  35. Societal Trends • Immigrants (people from other countries) are a source of labor, over history have filled important jobs that needed to be filled. Like what? • Outsourcing- business send jobs overseas to have them done cheaper or better • Downsizing is a planned reduction in the number of employees needed to reduce costs & be more efficient.
