  1. Noise reduction in Railway Traffics TRAM-SILENCE / 1

  2. Noise reduction in Railway Traffics Problem: • „Wheel squealing“ when travelling through curves • high-frequent, disturbing noises • Noise problem for the neighborhood • high costs for noise preventing measures TRAM-SILENCE / 2

  3. Reasons: • different distances for outer and inner wheel in curves • differential slip • torsion of the axles • Stick-slip-Effects, normally on the low rail TRAM-SILENCE / 3

  4. Remedy: • steered wheel sets: better adaptation of the axles to the curve radius • Disadvantage: high costs, reduces only wheel flange wear TRAM-SILENCE / 4

  5. Remedy: • Rail Head Treatment with intermediate agents TRAM-SILENCE TRAM-SILENCE 00 TRAM-SILENCE / 5

  6. Remedy: • TRAM-SILENCE is applied manually onto the rail head • Consumption as low as possible • Application on the low rail is normally sufficient • Beginning some meters before the curve starts • End normally some meters behind the starting point of the curve • Bidirectional traffic: Application from the center of the curve in both directions TRAM-SILENCE / 6

  7. Remedy: • Recently, we had a lot of inquiries for a product which can be applied automatically • This can be done with TRAM-SILENCE at „normal“ temperatures, e.g. with REBS-lubricators • TRAM-SILENCE is not sprayable at low temperaturs • Therefore: Modification TRAM-SILENCE 00 TRAM-SILENCE / 7

  8. Composition:TRAM-SILENCE TRAM-SILENCE 00 Base oil: native synthetic Thickener: Ca-Seife inorganic Solids: Metal powder, Graphite Properties: First results of spray tests with TRAM-SILENCE 00: Sprayability down to -20°C possible • BEKA Fluilub • Vogel SP 9 • REBS (-15°C) TRAM-SILENCE / 8

  9. Customers: • several local tramway operators in Germany Jena, Frankfurt/Oder, Leipzig, Gera, Dresden etc. • Deutsche Bahn AG (pre-trials) • Dutch Railway NS (Practical trial) • Spanish Railway RENFE and some local operators • several Australian operators • Several swiss operators TRAM-SILENCE / 9

  10. Customers: TRAM-SILENCE / 10

  11. Consumption rates and results • Consumption rate is dependent from local conditions e.g. Curve radius, Rail- and Wheel condition, Weather etc. • Slogan: as much as necessary, as few as possible • Braking, traction and signalling must not be affected • Friction coefficient with TRAM-SILENCE is not worse than on wet rails • Rough estimation of consumption: ca. 0,1 g/m on the low rail TRAM-SILENCE / 11

  12. Future aspects • Demand for these products will increase because the problem awareness is increasing • Application changes over more and more to automatic lubricators • We shoul actively discuss these problems with our customers. Their problems are waiting for solutions. • We should not talk about Rail Head Lubrication, but about Rail Head Treatment. • There is a huge potential for these products. TRAM-SILENCE / 12
