  1. She was criticized for leading popular bible studies (because she was a woman) and challenging the authority of ministers (church officials). • Became known as “Separatists” because they started to separate/ have different ideas than the Puritans • She was encouraged by Roger Williams to establish her own settlement in Rhode Island. • She rejected the idea that government could control her religious beliefs= idea later used for the constitution of the United States. • Her trials and accusations against her make her the most famous, or infamous, English woman in colonial American history. Roger Williams • Founded Rhode Island in 1636 and separated church and state • One of the first to propose a separation of church and state • Established a colony in present day Rhode Island and started the first Baptist Church in America • Studied Native American languages and demanded that they be treated fairly in business dealings • Was one of the first abolitionists in the colonies (wanted to get rid of slavery) because he tried to outlaw slavery in his colony

William Penn • An experiment in the possibility of equality and self-government • Quakers • Believed in being tolerant of other religions • Founded Pennsylvania • Wanted a place where Quakers could live according to their religious beliefs and make political decisions based on those beliefs • 1681-1776 wrote the “Frames of Government”…a document which guaranteed religious freedom to ALL settlers in Pennsylvania
